yeah i know, but their band page has them tagged as folk, its in the description, and elsewhere on the internet i see them described as "indie folk" and "folk rock", and i just have no idea where thats coming from.

I don't think it's completely unfounded. It doesn't apply to this or Shriek, but their earlier work definitely has a folk rock quality to it in the electric guitar tones of many of the songs and in Wasner's singing. If you look at the rym genre tags on their albums the folk aspect is always a secondary genre and I think that's an accurate characterization.
I must say though, I just listened to a few songs from The Knot again, and they were better than I remember them being! I may have to reevaluate that album.

I must say releasing this as a surprise seems to have been quite a poor move on the band's part. While it was great for their longstanding fans, they're not popular enough that many publications adjusted their schedules to work in reviews of this, so the only buzz this really got was the day or two after its release, when instead the band could have generated some momentum for the album beforehand by releasing a single or two.

Yeah that's what had me thinking how poor the surprise release move was, the p4k review was pretty much the only one I've seen aside from the couple that were posted like the day after this was released. Maybe more publications will start putting up reviews now but I doubt it.
