I think Tilian did an awful job with Carl Barker, he sounded so boring and flat on that song. Other than that it was pretty good, nothing really surprising

Tillian is the best singer DGD has had in my opinion. I really liked this release too. Also, not to attack you Calc, but how do you say it's terrible, but give it a 3.5?

he was mocking my soundoff of this

Tilian rules on this, but I agree on Carl Barker. He's a bit lackluster on that track, which is a shame because it's one of my favorite DGD tracks.

Same Spirit, Carl Barker is my favorite DGD song and it kills me not to like this rendition of it

mocking is a strong word, just copy pasting.

lol tilian is not a countertenor by any stretch of the imagination. he's just a really high tenor.

the only person I can think of who goes higher than him is Kellin Quinn

yes, he sings in the countertenor "range", yet his timbre and colour are not light or feminine enough for him to be a true countertenor. if you listen to real, classically trained countertenors, like andreas scholl or philippe jarrousky, you'll tell the difference in timbre and tone immediately. i would love to hear tillian as a classical countertenor, i'm sure he would be incredible.

The vocalist from Of Machines was a countertenor, Tilian is just a higher register tenor. He can hit the lower notes of a countertenor though

This shit sucks.

i disagree, dylan anderson was not a countertenor. sure, he used falsetto aggresively and often, however, when he wasn't belting, his softer melodies were far too dark and weighty. even his higher, fifth octave belts lacked the lightness and ease of a true countertenor. no, dylan anderson was just a tenor who belted and strained a lot, and is much lower placed than tilian. it is generally problematic to claim somebody is a countertenor outside of classical music, because non-classical countertenors do not really exist.

"it is generally problematic to claim somebody is a countertenor outside of classical music, because non-classical countertenors do not really exist."
yeah
and often, countertenors are baritones/basses trained to use their falsetto in that manner

Album slays, everyone on it is clear and pristine and raw. Nice review. It's worth pointing out their next album due in the fall will be closer to DBM and Death Star, rather than Acceptance Speech or Instant Gratification. Gonna be interesting hearing Tilian sing over more experimental emo prog rock or whatever category you guys put their earlier albums under. Jon Mess will sound awesome, as he always does. Dude's a beast

the only non-classical countertenor i can think of is klaus nomi. yet he often switched between singing countertenor and baritone-ish sections.

i guess countertenor is a bit of a stretch for him, but I find it a better description of his vocal style/range than anything i can really think of. maybe an "effeminate style".

How would you categorize Dylan then? Just as a high-pitched tenor?
I've always thought of him as a countertenor, he sung so damn high

a better description for tilian would simply to call him a tenor, because that's what he is.
