I can't agree more about Lateralus. I thought it was an excellent album that drug on too far.
Excellent review. I haven't heard this album yet, and even with how much I love Ænima, I'm not really in a hurry to listen to it. But I will eventually.

Great review Med. I can't comment on the band as I have never heard a Tool song.

I totally disagree with this review, but I think it's one of the best written I've seen. I'm one of those people who think Aenema and Lateralus were classic, so maybe that's why we disagree. :P

I hope no one votes this review badly because of personal bias. It was an excellent review. I agree with your conclusion that Wings Part 1 sucks, why does everybody love that song? It is so tedious. I think you should appreciate Rosetta Stoned and Jambi for what they are, though. You seem angry that Maynard's vocals were distorted, and that Tool wasn't being "progressive" enough. Who cares? Jambi may not be progressive, but nonetheless a fun listen. To me, the only song that stands out as "terrible" is Wings Part 1, but other than that, this album keeps you interested. One last note: I completely agree with your idea that 3.5 is the actual "average" vote. I try too keep my ratings as close to the actual word that describes them, and I appreciate your effort to do this. This Message Edited On 05.23.06

I'm not really angry about it not being progressive, so much as making the observation that Jambi (to my mind) simply isn't progressive music in any meaningful sense of the word. Since most of my favourite Tool songs are among their most progressive, it was just something that really struck me when listening to it. Thanks for the comments, everyone.

Thanks for the clarification. I thought you were just ragging on it based on some interpretation of what music you think the band should make. This Message Edited On 05.23.06

Lol Honeymoon_Croon. Unlike most Tool albums, this one steadily gets worse the more you listen to it.

Top-notch reveiw, Med!
I agree with nearly all your points, with the exception of Rosetta Stoned, in that I actually like it. And Lipan Conjuring. For some reason I focking love it.

The only song I listen to on a regular basis from this disc is Vicarious. The Pot, Right In Two, and 10,000 days get occasional spins.
Vicarious as the lead single REALLY got my hopes up for a cd that truely rocks in all the right ways. But alas, there is just too much bullshit on this cd.

Iluvatar-The two Wings for Marie are pretty much my favorite Tool tracks. After relistening to Tool and finding that I really don't like them all that much, this is my favorite Tool album.
i dont get what you are trying to say, is it that you dont like the two songs, after you said they were your favorites, or do you not like their other stuff, but love this album? it seemed contradictory, but maybe i just dont catch your drift

This album just keeps going on and on. The Pot is ridiculously good, probably my favorite tool song, but even that could have been shortened by a minute. If they just wrote some songs and stopped being so pretentious they'd be so great.

better to spend your money on a cd that actually is worth its $13. you get 76 minutes of music with this, compared to a linkin park CD where you get half the music for the same price
