Great review dude. This is one of the most enjoyable metal albums I've heard in a while, certainly my favorite of 2016 so far. The groovy riffs, and Fell's nasty vocals pair so well together. I enjoy this much more than what Fell did with Lord Mantis, and the production on this album is phenomenal.

" Slinging misogynistic and homophobic rhetoric isn't okay in metal in 2016 (nor was it ever)"

Have to agree with that one. Decrying misogyny has always been a cornerstone of extreme metal. Cannibal Corpse frequently touched on this subject in their earlier work with eloquently written satirical masterpieces like "Stripped, Raped and Strangled" and "Fucked with a Knife." Chris Barnes is practically the modern day Jonathan Swift.

Black Metal has its heroes as well. Bard Eithun and Jon Nodtveidt worked tirelessly in the 90s to make sure that the black metal community was accepting of diverse sexual lifestyles.

It really has been wonderful to be part of music scene that has championed social equality since its inception. I'm glad that in 2016 everyone is as progressive and forward thinking as they have ALWAYS been.

I think the point of that sentence isn't so much that misogyny has never been widespread in metal (it still is), but more that it's never been justified, and good on Erik Wunder for recognizing that.

Yeah I think he just meant it's never been acceptable, regardless of how widespread it's been in the past.

"Its bluesy feel hits hard right away, putting at the forefront something that was always felt but never seen."

I'm not sure if you're making an allusion to something else here but Gin starts in the same manner. The dusty western-esque guitar trappings were a big part of Gin's sound.

"it's hard not to recall bands like Refused or even Trap Them."

Especially if you've never listened to Refused or Trap Them.

"Slow Forever is down right bestial"

downright

"known for was a vehicle for Phil McSorely oppressive anger"

McSorley's

"His contributions to the album is immense"

Either 'contributions are immense' or 'contribution is immense'

"Its a double album"

It's

It's alright Johnny. You're pretty excellent but I have no reason to ever read your reviews. Your taste is not my cup of meat.

"there's a lot of Today is the Day, early Mastodon, shit even Lord Mantis kinds of sounds here"

Strongly agree with the TITD sound but don't exactly hear Masterdonger nor Lord Mantis. Just because Charlie is doing vocals on this doesn't whole elicit styling of the LM style. The low end on the mix isn't crushing my spine with its punch or vomiting on me with filth.

Idk, this just isn't Cobalt to me. Too many stylings going on here that just seem undercooked

How many times did you listen through? Just curious. It was definitely better the 2nd and 3rd times around. You get a lot more of the lyrics as well.

I've listened about 2 times completely through and a good chunk of a third time. It does sound a little better I will admit, but the vocals upstage everything here especially since Slow Forever feels a lot more subdued than Gin or Eater of Birds

Yeah my first impression was "long and boring." But the second time through it started to coalesce. It's a good album but the music is too neat and polished to fit the grimy-ass vocals
