I dunno, this album seems a bit overrated. It is still really good, but there are better. I prefer Mule Variations from this era.

I've grown to love all his albums, initially hesitant with some of his ideas. From start to finish this ticks all my boxes, it has my favourite bluesy Waits ballads alongside some of his more demented folk experiments. Usually I find his albums completely overwhelming, ignoring a lot of songs in favour of the few which stand out but i've listened to this from start to finish a few times now and can do nothing but feel in awe at how well constructed the songwriting is despite the oddball arrangements.
Mule Variations is just as good I think but I haven't listened to it quite as much, around this era Waits stuff has its own surreal quality to it.

You really can't go wrong with Tom Waits, but I think Bone Machine has a particular emotional quality to it that makes it some of his greatest work. It's up there with Rain Dogs as Tom Waits' best album.

She was 15 years old
And never seen the ocean
She climbed into a van
With a vagabond
And the last thing she said
Was "I love you mom"
Makes me so teary lol
