Like I said, I've never listened to anything from SKM or Jesu before. But if it all sounds like this, then I definitely won't like it.

the music is pretty much 100% jesu. skm doesn't sound anything like this and kozelek actually has a sweet singing voice

Shame he barely uses it and wastes his time wanking himself off reading fanmail instead

I love both artists, but definitely didn't like this much at all.

why is the dude's voice so loud in this compared to the guitars? Kinda kills the hazy shoegaze atmosphere to have his clear voice sitting on top of it all. I'm only a minute into the first track but this feels really disjointed already. Is it all like this?

I'm intrigued and amused a few songs in, trying to assess it is like following an old rambling sage through the fields, giggling while taking notes.

Sorry man, but this review is bad. Your willful ignorance of the artists and unfamiliarity with the style of music they're presenting (14 minutes is an obscene length for a song, really?) does not make me take your opinion seriously. Good on you for checking out new music, but you might want to think about whether you're able to give a well-informed compelling opinion. This just comes across as "I streamed an album and I just don't get it. It's not for me. If this is what you're into well then good for you (eye roll)." I just don't think you're making a compelling argument and the whole premise of your review is off-putting.

You're new to reviewing, and I wouldn't want to discourage anyone from getting into writing; however, you should probably stick to talking about music styles you really know. A reviewer should come across as informed about their topic, and you really undercut yourself when you spend so much of the review writing about how you're a noob to both bands on this collaboration. There are a few lines that make me laugh out loud, such as when you fault the "excessive" length of the songs, even going so far as to bold the 14 minute length of "Beautiful You." Jesu has a lot of drone and post metal elements, and your complaints come across as fundamental misunderstandings of the genre. Mark has also never shied away from writing songs that are 10+ minutes, especially lately. People that know these guys are probably expecting the elements you disparage, so your review comes off as willful ignorance. Your opinion just seems baseless.

Please don't think I'm being pretentious and saying you can't have an opinion about the necessity of the length or how enjoyable the album is, but the simple fact that is that you make your ignorance so stated in the review that it prevents your writing from having much efficacy. I do actually agree with you to some degree. The album does drag a bit in the middle parts; it can even feel a bit lifeless at times. But your review feels like its paying no respect to the artists or genre. It's like a high school kid who complains that math is boring or pointless out of frustration because they don't get it. The truth is, you probably should not claim the authority of reviewing anything unless you're coming at the genre or artist with some background knowledge. I recommend writing reviews in familiar genres that you love while slowly familiarizing yourself with genres that expand your musical interests and horizons. Your skill and tact with sharpen over time.

And yeah, obviously you can review whatever you want. I'm just some stranger on the Internet, after all. I'm just giving you some tips that could help people take you more seriously.

That's a good point. I agree, I should probably listen to more songs by SKM or Jesu before saying this one album sucks. I mean, I probably wouldn't like a lot of them if they sound like this, but that just means it's not for me.

I'm writing more reviews, ones of artists that I'm already familiar with. Hopefully those turn out better.
