Great album, especially the whole first half. They brought back the heaviness and epic riffs but also kept the songs focused and catchy

this is not a mix of red and blue
it's blue with a lot of the worst parts of yellow and green mixed in

I'm pretty sure this is going to be the best release up to this point in their career. I'll give it a spin tonight.

this is so good. i actually enjoy the production here, the fuzz and compression adds to the sound. this is the first baroness album i've been able to get into

Can't help but agree with many of the comments here. Something is horribly off in the production in this. Idk why, everything sounds so flat and soulless.
Also those usual super catchy, super tight, signature Baroness choruses and guitar solos just feel a little lackluster on this album.
I want to love Purple so bad, cause I love this band so much and have been so impressed by what they've done in the past, but I am having a really difficult time falling in love with this one.

While I agree that the soud of the album is an issue, could we agree that it's not a production, but a mixing issue? There are also some issues production-wise (too many bells and whistles in most of the songs), but how it sounds is mostly a mixing issue, unless the mics they used were rubbish, which I don't think is the case.

Btw I got over that issue with Letlive's The Blackest Beautiful, too, so I should at some point with this as well. The feeling of Purple being overproduced a lot of times sure doesn't help, though...

"could we agree that it's not a production, but a mixing issue" You're correct. I have a bad habit of using these words interchangeably but it's definitely a mixing issue. I'm sure the raw tracks sounded much better before they were mixed. This album is loud as shit which is never a good sign.

I'm guessing that I will like this band

Very clipped album, automatically unhearable for me. The worst is that music seems quite good.

you guys are wrong about the mix. Mixing is all about instrument levels, EQ, arrangements, layering etc.
The mastering process is where the audio compression and clipping occur, where an album can sound organic and dynamic(i.e. Steven Wilson or Colin Marston) or utterly brickwalled and bland (i.e. Zach Ohren).

The first two sentences of this review made me wish I wasn't colorblind and purple didn't just kinda look like blue to me
