Never thought about it before, but I think you're right, "one of the finest debuts".

Album rules. Knopfler rules. Review rules.

Yeah, everything rules on this album.

This one's pretty good, but I wouldn't call it classic. Probably my least favorite of theirs but I haven't heard it that much comparatively with their other stuff

Probably you're right man. The problem is that all the Dire Strait albums are great.
|
| |
yeah exactly. I'd probably give this a 4 at least i'd need to hear it again to be sure though

Knopfler is underrated as hell, yeah
Nothing in here touches Telegraph Road though which is probably one of the best songs ever

Yeah, man. I need to do the same. I don't hear this album for centuries.

completely agree, Telegraph Road is a masterpiece, Tunnel of Love is really good too

As I wrote before, here. My favourite albums of them are Making Movies and Love Over Gold, which are two precious rock jewels.
|
| |
those are the ones I've listened to the most easily. Brothers in arms is good too for walk of life and so far away.

Their live stuff is also very good man. I know all the three albums here on Sputnikmusic. Anyway I recommend you to listen to Alchemy, which I think is their best and most complete live stuff.
|
| |
ill check it out, I know Knopfler is a jazzy cat so he has to put on a good show

Glad to see so much discussion. This is my favorite DS album, but Making Movies and Love Over Gold are right behind. None of them are anything less than great for me though.

I prefer their live ''On the Night'' which contains a great setlist (no Telegraph Road though), but it's more representative to the sound of the band. ''Alchemy'' is overrun by the snare drum in a totally different style. I actually don't recognize the drummer, and it's not a good thing.
I'm listening to that debut of theirs atm, and I might bump it up to a 4.5. Great review.
