So wat if a band sells out. As long as you like the music you shouldnt care about the record company or the money there making.

This album was definitly the beginning of the end. It has some good songs but some pretty bad ones too. They also didn't make any good albums afterwards although a few a good songs.

I disagree. I think they made a couple good albums after this one (S&M, Garage Inc.). Although I guess those two shouldn't really count. I also don't think this album was the beginning of the end, but that's your opinion so i'm not gonna give you shit for it.
(Jesus Christ, we're on the second page . I never dreamed of getting so many comments)

honestly metallica did not sell out, this album is still based around thrash metal and i think people who knew metallica before this album think they 'sold out' becauce they made an album everyone liked not just the metal enthusiests or players but everyone form the rap loving 'gangster' to black and death metal lovers this album was and is probly one of the most well known and best albums metallica has made and its also the first album they made with pre recording or jason newsted and the reason they chose a different root on that is because they couldnt find a new bass player. so we have a biased opinion on this and i think if people took in to consideration these factors theyd realize how awsome and rocking this album really is P.S. St.Anger was the beginning of the end

Woah a ton of comments; that is how popular this band are I guess. Pretty good review for a pretty good album that pales in comparison to previous works.

"St.Anger was the beginning of the end"
Man Load is widely acknowledged as the beginning of the end for Metallica. It's was not that bad in my opinion, but not that good either.

Whether you're a member of the old-skool Metallica faithful, or a fully-fledged Load/ReLoad fan, you can't deny the excellence of this record. The song-writing on this album is second to none, not to mention the production is absolutely amazing. It has it's hater's, but I truly think it deserves it's place among the classics. Just a remarkable effort.

Can someone clearly define what 'selling out' is because IMO its a bullshit term that gets used too much.
Is it when a band becomes popular? or when their music goes more mainstream and poppy?
metallica became really popular because of albums such as M.O.P, A.J.F.A and this one.
anyway good review, I disagree with you saying that of wolf and man is a bad track though. that and enter sandman are the two best tracks on the album i reckon.

Yeah alot of people have been disagreeing with my rating of "Of Wolf And Man", but I stick by it. Anyways I don't think anyone is quite sure what a sell-out is anymore. Probably because the term gets thrown around so much. Mostly I reckon it's when a band changes their style of music or appearence just because it's what all the other popular bands are doing.

Does anyone else think that perhaps the source of Hetfields amazing song writing ability stemmed from his hair? Think about it, right after this album they all cut their hair. Have they made a really good album since this one, no.

They "matured" on their sound, which is different

I'm not quite sure I understand that comment. Are you suggesting that Load has a more "mature" sound than The Black Album?

Definetelly, it isnt as good as this one but they definetelly "matured" lyrically, vocally and musically....altough musically was for the worst

I think you may be mis-using the word mature. Or, perhaps I'm misunderstanding what you meant by it. But usually in my experience when music "matures" it becomes better not worse.

I think he means they sucked more.
|

No, when a band matures they explore new ideas and ways of thinking, instead writing the same thing over and over.

And it just so happens that these "new ideas and ways of thinking" led to St. Anger.
Right?
