like that some staff are writing more than two paragraph reviews still

As always, I'm a bit confused... Is Ashe still in this band? If so, does he sing at all?
Or is he full time with Voices from the Fuselage now?

Ta. Don't mind what I've heard from that record, so planning on giving it a spin soon.
Which am I more likely to prefer TD; that or this?

if you really liked Altered State then you might not like this as much.

I've never heard 'Altered State', and very little of this band full stop.

Is this anything like the first album?

bass throughout is reminiscent of it
everything else is a bit more twinkly and upbeat

Still not sure if I'm going to check this out. Altered State grew off of me really fast but I do like Dan a lot more as a vocalist

While I disagree with you on a few things about the album, I sew what you mean by them. Nonetheless excellent review!

5 for me man. This is fucking beautiful. Hopefully not honeymoon period. But this is sick. Tourniquet! Utopia! A couple of OK tracks buffered by a lot of the most creative stuff thee guys have ever done. We're moving away from metal and into some gorgeous progressive metal rock hybrid. So much variety. Production is absolutely top notch.
How many. How many of my favorite bands have let me down recently? Most of 'em. Cynic. Coheed. Anberlin. So many. I always catch bands on their way out of the glory years. And here's an album that assures me that I'm witnessing a band on it's way far, far up. Just awesome.

I understand where this review is coming from completely, but I really do think they've found some special hybrid here. In the way that BMTH/OMM/VoM and all of those bands are reaching for the mainstream, these guys seem to be trying to hit a broader audience, yet still remain incredible close to their roots. I feel more structure to these songs, and though the disarray (in a positive way) used to be what I loved most, I really enjoy how tight this release is. Hopefully it doesn't grow off of me because I love this band and everything they do. The Concealing Fate EP is one of my favorite releases of all time.

I consider One to be one of my favorite metal albums, so I was extremely excited for an even better continuation of One, but it looks like that isn't the case anymore.
Pretty bummed.

Digging this.
The source material is a little more wavy and atmospheric, but the production pushes the heavier parts beyond just a djent wank-fest into something way more fulfilling. Really suits the songs, and while Tompkins doesn't QUITE have the same range as O'Hara, I prefer his delivery in truth.
