Yeah Jethro, it gets better with each listens.
About Echolyn, I had never thought of that. But since you mention it, it isn't so strange as it seems. As you know, Echolyn is a band strongly influenced by Gentle Giant, and in my opinion, Push And Profit is also. Although, as you mention, it's no rip-off. However, I can also see clearly Genesis influences, era-Gabriel, in both cases, the Echolyn tracks you mention and the album.
By the way, I can see on Push And Profit clearly influences of Genesis, Gentle Giant, King Crimson and Pink Floyd. For instance, Diminished reminds me some softer parts of early Genesis; "The Reasoning Wall, King Crimson and Gentle Giant; Carmilla, King Crimson; The Nursery Year, Genesis (a coincidence because the name?); Systems, Genesis; Blueprint, Pink Floyd (especially the guitar work with similitudes with Gilmour); America, Pink Floyd (especially their ballads). The only track that reminds me nothing is Faces Of The Petty. However, I don't like particularly the track. It's more a rock & roll song and I think it's a little dislocated on the album.
And yes, I've the same opinion. On Push And Profit, Discipline was trying to discover their own path, yet.
Jethro, tell me what you think about the influences on the tracks.
P.S. Echolyn is another great band of the 90's.

Which tracks? Those from Punch and Profit, or those from Unfolded?
And yes, Echolyn have a collection of great tracks, but I find the band to be inconsistent in their quite prolific career but both Suffocating the Bloom and Cowboy Poems Free are quite solid. I haven't heard their last two though. As the World is a great album too.

Those I spoke before, Push An Profit. What I mean is if you see the same influences, of the same bands, as I see them, on the same tracks.

I have to relisten to the whole thing before giving you my feelings. But for now, I can tell you I heard some Echolyn everywhere, so it made me kind of affected my judgement regarding the other influences. I'm gonna listen to the album again. Faces of the Pretty is kind of a nod and a wink to Frank Zappa, if you take a look at the vocals. Even the music has some Zappa twists into it.

Ok.

1- Diminished; PFM
2- The Reasoning Wall; Gentle Giant, Echolyn
3- Carmilla; King Crimson, mainly the 2nd half with its guitar tone.
4- The Nursery Year; Neal Morse
5- Faces of the Pretty; Frank Zappa, particularly bass and vox.
6- Systems; Spock's Beard
7- Blueprint; Camel vs Pink Floyd. Very Camelish in the first part, and very Pink Floydish in the second part.
8- America; Not sure about that one, a mixture of influences, but it's a pretty damn good ballad. I'd say Pink Floyd among others, yeah. Also maybe Peter Gabriel solo. Or Marillion's Fish era of course. So yeah.

The way Into the Dream closes is exactly the kind of epic climax I needed that Canto was missing

Crutches has his epic climax too near the end (at 9:42). Reminds me of some good Spock's Beard. Listening to Into the Dream atm.
Edit: yes, Into the Dream has an epic ending.
Album Push and Profit seriously grows on me.

Jethro, it's very interesting to see two people in the same album, seeing different influences from different bands. However, there are many common points on both views. And yes, I'm sure the album will grow more on you with the time. Discipline is really a great band and even this album is very good.

been meaning to check this band

Bumped up to a 4.5. First two songs appeal a lot to me. Listening to To Shatter All Accord at the moment and it's also better than I thought.
