Honestly, my highest rating for this year is 4.5 and I gave it to Quiet World and Gavin Harrison's cover album. This year has been a bit overwhelming. Steven Wilson, Riverside, Leprous, David Maxim, Beardfish, all had excellent albums but nothing I could call AOTY.

In Absentia was also sort of a concept album, but Wilson, in typical Wilson fashion, fucked up massively in his lyrics and made the "storyline" impossible to follow. Also, Deadwing is overrated.

Your review is okay but ultimately sounds a bit too much biased. Calling the dude one of the most important figures in music of the past 20 years would be a bit more than a stretch for me.

@daniel

In Absentia doesn't have a standard storyline. It's just a theme album. It revolves around different mentalities that are hollow inside. That have a huge blank space in them. Thus the ''In Absentia'' title. It's not one person, rather, each song is about someone else.

Well then it's Wilson's fault for trying to pass it off as a concept album. Regardless his lyrics are fucked up inconsistent as usual, I mean on one song he's going on about serial killers (believe it's Blackest Eyes) then all of a sudden Trains comes along and it's a totally different subject. Then he talks about the state of the music business... let's just say he's not the best storyteller out there.

I'm stoned in the mall again
Terminally bored
Shuffling round the stores
And shoplifting is getting so last year's thing

X-Box is a god to me
A finger on the switch
My mother is a bitch
My father gave up ever trying to talk to me

FOABP's lyrics are not ideal. But on other albums they are really good. For instance, I really dig Deadwing's lyrics. Or Lighbulb Sun's ones.

Ugh, he's so annoying on Halo (which otherwise is an okay song I guess). Lightbulb Sun was great when I first heard it but it didn't have a lot of replay value ever since. The Rest Will Flow is great though, if I recall. His lyrics are still annoying in that album.

FIVE CHORDS THAT MADE A MILLION!!! (x999)
