 | Emerson, Lake and Palmer Welcome Back To The Show That Never Ends » Back to review | |
Album Rating: 4.5
@tef, yes I didn't know anything about John Miles, but now I filled that educational gap. One cannot know everything after all ;)
@e21, thanks for the infos about Discipline. I listen to ''Unfolded Like Staircase'' atm. Another good band influenced by VDGG; Gargamel. Check them out!
| | | When I was like 11 I listened to Karn Evil 9 for the first time and Carl Palmer's massive drum solo was the first one I'd ever heard. It was a life changing moment. That man is a beast.

Ok, altertide0.
About the first point, I can agree with you. I dispensed too much time writing about the band.
About the second point, I maintain my opinion. I need to talk about the tracks, explaining from what studio albums they were taken. The only problem, and I think it's very important, is that I should talk about the studio albums, saying what are my favorites, if the tracks were well chosen, if I preferred these or other tracks, which are the best bands tracks, etc ..., to allow people being well informed.
About the third track, I disagree because I mentioned some of those things, as you can see.
So, we have:
1st: "Emerson, Lake & Palmer, isn’t just a bunch of technology crazy machine programming guys but a really astonishing live band";
2nd: "The repertoire chosen is excellent and the live versions are amazingly performed."
3rd: "The album also proves that Emerson is as good at classical piano as he is with his synthesizers."
Anyway, I'm glad you told me that. A construtive critic is always welcome. In the future, I will be more careful.

You must hear it again. The album is probably a little bit excessive. But we must see it in those times. The album is really great and the musicians are astonishing. Give to it another chance listening to it with more mature ears.

Yes, the man is really a beast. But Emerson is also another beast with his keyboards.

You're welcome man.
Check the other albums too.

Will do for sure, and on your side, take a moment to listen to Gargamel, another great but short-lived band influenced by VDGG.
As for Discipline, I can hear some good Anekdoten into it as well.
My rating for this live album; 4.5. You're right, it's one of the great live albums of the 70's.
Do you know Triumvirat? If you dig ELP, you're gonna dig them.

I confess that I never heard nothing about Gargamel. But I will check them, soon as I can.
I also love Anekdoten. By the way, do you know another Swedish group named Anglagard? Usually, they're considered the counterpart of Discipline. The music is different, very melancholic, the typical scandinavian melancholy. They're also amazing. All their three studio albums Hybris, Epilog and Viljans Oga are superb.
Yes man. The ELP's live album is really amazing, despite its excesses.
I love Triumvirat. All their four first albums are great, but Spartacus and above all Illusions On A Double Dimple, are excellent. I deeply regret the end of the group. Their last two albums A La Carte and Russian Roulette are absolutely awful. They have nothing to do with prog. It's a pity that a great composer and keyboardist like Jurgen Fritz has done such aberrations. One more prog band, victim of the punk, of the record labels and of the media.

When you say Gargamel, do you mean the Norwegian band and the albums are Watch For The Umbles and Descending, right?
| | | Album Rating: 4.5
Yes, that's what I mean. I found Descending on Spotify. I think I slightly prefer Watch for the Umbles. I try to find you a link. I'm not really good at it, so you could find it before me ;)
And yes, I know Anglagard. I'm very fond of Hybris, and also their last is a great grower. Epilog contains a superb track in ''Hostsejd''. Great album too, but to a lesser extent. I prefer the more spacey sound of Anekdoten though. Anglagard is sometimes too tight, too compact; not enough room to breath, imo.
You're right, Triumvirat were also victims of the ruthless Dark Age of prog. ''Illusions on a Double Dimple'' is my favorite, followed by ''Spartacus'', but their first one is incredible too.
Edit; Watch for the Umbles can be found on you tube.
| | | @e210013 (why such an uneasy name?) I'm glad you changed your mind about the first point. And let's agree to disagree about the second point. About the third point, you're right, you do mention these things, but the structure of the sentences makes it feel like you don't. I think it would have been better if you have written it this way (linking the sentences):
"... but a lot of many other things, which essentially prove that Emerson, Lake & Palmer..."
OR this way (changing the order of the sentences):
"... but a lot of many other things. The repertoire chosen is excellent and the live versions are amazingly performed. The album also proves that Emerson is as good at classical piano as he is with his synthesizers. What it does essentially prove is that Emerson, Lake & Palmer, isn’t just a bunch of technology crazy machine programming guys but a really astonishing live band. This album is probably..."
It seems more logical to me this way. But I'm probably being over-sensitive.
Anyway that's all. And thanks, it's always a pleasure to have a cultural argument. Good luck with the future texts!

Thanks. It was a pleasure.

Here's the link for Gargamel's ''Watch for the Umbles''

If you want Descending, it's on Spotify. It seems you only find it partially on youtube. In my country in any case.
Music is a grower for some songs, but for the majority, it's an instant enjoyement. It's quite dark, and vocals remind pretty much Peter Hammill.

Thanks once more Jethro.
And yes, that is really a nice thought .

No problem, e21. Finally, Descending > Watch for the Umbles. Definitely.

Not quite as good as Yessongs, but still pretty great summary of the band live. Loved the snippet of Epitaph in Tarkus, just like ELP referenced Court in Pictures at an Exhibition. Not crazy about Bender/Sheriff, but that's about it.
Also...absolute MORONS at Manticore! I hate when a double album has the first side paired with the fourth side...and they had the bright idea to do this crap with a triple album. I'm sitting here fumbling through discs every twenty minutes. Ridiculous.
| | | Album Rating: 5.0
I agree with you Friday, not quite as good but almost. And "Bender/Sheriff" are not my cup of tea too.
Nice to have a triple vinyl album. I don't have my old vinyl version unfortunately. I sold it many years ago to a close friend.
