I recently heard some tracks from these guys off their myspace. They're not as bad as I remembered. They're quite talented. But I don't think I'd ever really get into them...

"The Mars Volta gets far too loud and crazy without truly accomplishing anything." says it all. This Message Edited On 09.21.06

Very good review. When this LP came out, I just couldn't listen to anything else, but with FtM and Amp released, I realized how inferior this album is compared to the latter two. (For example in Eriatarka and Cicatriz ESP, before we get to hear the chorus for the first time, there is that long-drawn-out preparation which grows more annoying the more you listen to it.)

This album has a lot of mistakes, but hides them almost perfectly. Unlike Amputechture, which tears its heart out and puts it in front of you, with all the hope and sadness and everything else in it.... and it came out perfect.

Reviewer dude, it seems to me that, rather than reviewing the album when you had time to listen to it 7 or 8 times through, you deliberately left it to when you'd played it to death. I appreciate your comment about 'Cicatriz ESP'; personally I thought that the bits either side of the ambient bit were enough to redeem the track. Other than that, pretty nice review.

you know,i can't help but think 'this guy is clueless' every time someone reviews a concept album track by track.

this is not a singles review guys.this (and many more albums) is a concept album.you have to exeprience it as a whole and not splice it in bits.

i mean, this is like breaking down your girlfriends' legs/eyes/ass and rating them and saying her eyes are like this and her tits are like this etc

you miss the whole point.

this is an intelligent album from one of 2-3 of the best bands of the 00's and i highly recommend it to anyone whose brain vision has evolved past the normalities of the average mind.

4,5/5

and please stop these dorky track-by-track reviews.

john, if its not latin influenced then how do you explain the major reliance on triads throughout their work?

or the tribal-oriented, furious, progressive beats that are 100% indicative of latin music?

which were adapted from egyptian music in the first place a long time ago.
irrelevant. all music was adapted from something-somewhere, if we want to go down that rabbit trail..

i'd agree with you on the tracks that have a predominant latin influence throughout the track, but nearly every 'freak out' session that twists into a free jazz realm in sooooo many of their songs breaks into the latin fever

this is specifically predominant in de-loused. and for the record, are you going to re-do this review along with young machetes?

i'm not black wtf
no insult... but you are pretty militant

used in tons of cultures
it's also understood that the latin culture is one the easiest examples of a culture from cultures; their origin is the combination of dozens of influences. that's why the census bureau hates latinos... they're the racial gray area. the progressive, free jazz-like percussion is one of the largest contributions from the latin community in modern music.

but seriously, are you going to re-do this review and make it a 5?

i still find it humorous to have john write this review, basically only giving it a 3 out of pure fanboyism, and immediately post with a 4.5 above his name

oh well

"Where have I been?" is what I started thinking about 3 minutes into this. The only bad thing I can think of (after 2 listens) is the pointless/annoying "ambience" sections.
