I can confirm that among a lot of music listeners in the states,SNW was not really well-liked. I don't know about the big critical havens, but Sputnik was one of the only places I was reading at the time where it was well-received. I tend to agree with Sputnik and think it's one of their best.

yeah, i definitely stand by that statement. i was never really all that huge on deftones until this album. i still think white pony is hella overrated

Good review. I agree that the music sometimes leave a desire for the riffs to progress (or change) somewhat toward the end of the song. But relatively straight-forward music has always been a characteristic of theirs.
I have this on par with Saturday Night Wrist as their 2nd best albums, trailing the White Pony.
