Wow!! Can't believe all the negative comments on this record. I love this album, and it definitely was a step up from Face Dances. It really shows how The Who were able to cross into the 80s. The album has a heavier sound and cool synth work. Eminence Front, Cooks County, It's Your Turn, Cry if You Want... All excellent compositions. It's clear most of you here aren't Who fans.

John makes some great points in the article. I think he's a little harsh in that it's a great "half" of an album...I don't think the band stopped caring, they simply ran out of gas. It started a few albums earlier on "The Who by Numbers" which was seen alternately in some circles as a solo album by main songwriter Pete Townshend or "a suicide note." Likewise, with 1978s Who Are You and 1981s Face Dances, Pete was having trouble writing material for the band. (In fact, in his 1983 announcement given when he quit The Who, he said it was because he could no longer write suitable material for them.) Back to It's Hard; the songs reflect anything but apathy. They are about getting older (Cry If You Want, It's Your Turn), Nuclear War (Athena, I've Known No War), poverty (Cooks County)...On the 1982 tour, the only location where they played Cooks County was in Chicago--where the song is based. Some of that show's proceeds went to local shelters/soup kitchens. That doesn't sound like a group that's lost its passion for the power of music. That energy shows up for much of the record. "If you got the guts to hang on you can make it." (It's Your Turn) Side One is very strong. Athena is a hooky pop-song that just happens to be about a nuclear warhead and ended up being the band's last Top 40 hit. Entwistle writes two strong tunes, the aforementioned Cooks County, and then side one ends with the best song on the album, "Eminence Front." Then The Who, who try heroically, run out of gas. Side two is bad; redeemed only by one tune, Cry if You Want:
Don't you get embarrassed when you think about the way you were
Yesterday the day before when you were young with much to learn
Aren't you glad it's your last term?
The Who weren't uncaring. They were exhausted. Fame. Addiction. The death of a member. Death of fans in Cincinnati. Still they carried on. From 1980-82, Pete wrote 4 albums of material (Empty Glass 1980; Face Dances, 1981; It's Hard, 1982; All the Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes, 1982.) It's Hard wasn't great, but it was a noble effort. I'd give it 5 stars out of 10. Or 2.5 in Sputnik terms.
