idk Mong, this and Orchid are pretty different imo. like they sound more like each other than they do like the rest of Opeth's discography but Orchid is more epic, folky and atmospheric while this one is much more dark, emotional and personal.

I get very different feelings from listening to the two albums, and I find this one is leaps and bounds above Orchid in terms of composition and emotional depth. Only thing better about Orchid is the production, and that's a very marginal difference.

In terms of how it fits into the band's discography as a whole, I find this is far more intimate and moving than anything else they ever released, and that's why it's my favourite.

Different strokes I suppose man. I actually find Orchid to be more emotional but I definitely favor this a bit more. After all, who don't like that touching slower passage in Twilight though?

I like Orchid more than this tbh. They're very close though yeah.

Orchids been a slow grower for me over the past 2 years since I first heard it. but this still trumps it in my books.

Advent and To Bid You Farewell bookend this thing perfectly

Agreed, and Mikael sounds awesome on most records but I can't get over how amazing he sounds here in particular.

The production, especially of the vocals, is kind of black metal-esque. Very very dry and harsh

On Orchid there's a really nice fullness to the sound of the vocals but what they do here is better for what they're trying to convey

Yeah all of the first 3 albums all have a strong bm influence.

Yea like I said they really sound echoy and higher pitched here. I wonder why he decided to go from full on screams to downright gutteral death metal vocals. He does both perfectly nonetheless but it's an interesting evolution.

He really wanted to change the overall sound between this album and MAYH because he felt like there were too many copycat bands out there (???????). I guess that was just a part of that change

I miss the dynamics of the vocals here

His cleans grow to be so beautiful though. Throw that in with some evil growls and you have the perfect vocalist.

so you're basically describing Watershed ;) that album rules vocally, the growls are brutal af and the cleans are so expressive

Nahhhhhh haha, I've always thought their decline in quality slowly began from Damnation and on. That said I still have that record and GR at a 4.

Yeah I agree in terms of songwriting for sure, but some of Mikael's best vocals are on Watershed imo

Damnation, GR and Watershed are all 3.5s for me

Watershed is underrated and Ghost Reveries is their best after Blackwater Park

Ghost Reveries could have been one of their best but The Grand Conjuration and Atonement drag it down a ton.

for me this is their best, followed by MAYH and then SL

Nah The Grand Conjuration is one of my least favs too. My top 2 would be BWP and SL

it repeats the same riff for like 2 years omg, I was never a fan of it

GR also kind of annoys me because it starts off as this amazing epic concept album but then the concept just fizzles out and it stops making sense
