Pretty good review
Third paragraph: change "underlining" to "underlying"
|
| |
"underlining" would be a fitting word choice if the "silliness" was a prominent feature of the described albums.

I neg'd. Here's several criticisms:
* Even though this is not a literal track-by-track review, you do focus too much on individual songs.
* Although there were some general statements about the album as a whole, I didn't feel like they managed to justify the 5.
* The over-paragraphisation disrupts the review's flow.
* Calling Josh Homme a guitar virtuoso is absurd. His playing is apt enough to do the job for what the band wanted to show, and that's about it.

I appreciate the constructive criticism, thankyou - when you say it doesn't justify the 5, do you mean my writing style isn't excited enough to warrant it, or is it just a massive disagreement with the labelling a 5 in the first place?
|
| |
Well, when I see a 5 rating, I expect that there would be a more universal approach to describing the album, rather than just saying that each individual song is great.
You did make two more universal statements: 1) The record exudes sleaze and 2) It's great for driving. OK, I agree with both of those, but they seem a bit humble.

I do want to try and stay away from getting overexcited and hyperbolic, but if it just genuinely comes across as not praising enough then obviously I'll need to look into that - I guess when I proofread the thing I just kinda knew how I feel about the record and assumed it would translate.
Notes definitely being made for next time!

@laughingskull - to be fair, he also claimed that the album has no low points. to be fair [2], he could have expanded upon that, and really hammered home the idea of consistency or whatever
"I do want to try and stay away from getting overexcited and hyperbolic"
- good idea, but it's possible to praise an album without getting too out of hand. if the album is a 5/5 for you, then i would assume the album deserves whatever praise you could dish out, provided you go about it levelheadedly.
"I just kinda knew how I feel about the record"
- go into more detail with this. like, if i sat down and asked you why this is a great album, what would you say about it overall? what does it do for you?
- also, I keep seeing you say something along the lines "notes for next time"... you do know you can edit your review, right? if you go to "my profile", you have the option to edit, and rectify whatever criticisms

Kinda a rough review but there's definitely something loveable about it. Gotta love the last paragraph....

I do say that a lot...
Yeah, I will edit the review but obviously what's important to me if I want to be a regular contributor to the site (which I very much do) is taking this on board permanently so that I can get my writing style correct the first time around.
|
| |
well yeah, but in the future if you read over your stuff to make changes before submitting, you'll be more in the habit of editing them a certain way. like, if you go to edit your review for this, and say "hmm i kinda talk a bit too much about specific tracks and not the album as a whole" and proceed to edit, you'll sorta subconsciously get used to that approach when you write another review. (I'm not really sure how i wanted to word this, but hopefully you see what I mean.)

Yeah, I do understand what you mean, I think though in such an early stage in my writing then there will be some rustiness regardless of how many times I read and read again - I'm very happy with this as only my 3rd ever review but there's miles of room for improvement.
It's just gonna take time and practice to eke out the inconsistencies and know what I'm looking for to make it more cohesive the first time round - but as I said to someguest, I enjoy the practice and am looking forward to bettering my output.

Edits made - will focus my next effort on being the happy mid-point between wall of text and over-paragraphing.

Laughingskull's criticisms of this review would be more legit if they informed his own reviews.

To his credit I see where he's coming from on most of his points, and I am always happy to take structured negative feedback.
The only thing I definitively disagree with his laughing off of labelling Homme a virtuoso - if 'his playing is apt enough to do the job for what the band wanted to show' and in my opinion what the band show is a perfect collection of dirty desert rock tracks, with his guitar work at the centre of it, doesn't that justify my definition?
He's an unconventional figurehead, absolutely, but I don't think that should detract from what I believe in him as a musician.

Great review. My only real quip is that the review is full of short(er) paragraphs. I tend to prefer bigger paragraphs which are based on one point rather than several one after the other, but it's personal preference I guess-whatever works for you man

I think it's a side-effect from previously having a TBT style, and I do wanna stray from wall-of-text articles - but it's definitely something I want to work on, I'm yet to find the right flow!
