Yeah this is Benji's crankier, more freewheeling sibling. I felt this to be gimmicky at first but it's growing on me over time

This album is clearly the (lyrically) logical follow up to the untouchable, Benji. Going back after a long break, I've realized how much of the instrumentation/experimentation is ignored on this album in relation to his previous works. He's taken the formula he's been smoothing out to various degrees of success since Among the Leaves (including his Desertshore & solo output) and thrown it into a meandering, trippy blend of an album that will, sadly, forever be Benji's agitated heir. There is, of course with proper time and attention allotted, a whole bag of tricks here really never witnessed from Mark Kozelek; like, ever.

Still a chore to listen to on the run, or more importantly, when not in the mood. Yet, an album that is certainly aging well and deserved of credit for its studio flourish and proggy (!) tendencies.

maybe I just need to spend some more time with Benji but I feel like I'm bound to enjoy every other Sun Kil Moon release I check out more at this point... been the case with both collabs with jesu and shaping up to be the same with this record as well
