"a lack of immediacy, of vitality, of My Morning Jacket really coming through the speakers to grab you like they do so easily in person"

I liked this review, and your points are all valid. MMJ will always be one of my favorite bands. Jim, as a fellow Taurus, has always been something of a soul neighbor to me and the themes in this record: heartache, injury, recovery, etc are extremely fitting for my life right now, so it is a 5 from me. It's strange how a personal connection to certain albums can erase all the fair pros and cons. To me, this might be my favorite record of theirs because of this. It's always a matter of taste, but I like psychedelic sounds. It sounds like the proper progression from Z.

They are incredible live agreed.

Check out their early stuff guys. The Tennesseee Fire is one of my favorite albums, period, and At Dawn is extremely good as well. It's a lot more interesting than their later stuff in my opinion.

This is pretty, but not something I'll go out of my way to listen to. Just gorgeous but not gripping, as the review states.

If you've never heard them before, then I'd describe this album as Dr. Dog singing on an electronically enhanced Fleet Foxes album.
