Oddly enough their last record was my first experience with Emperor, not as bad as a starting point as you may think.

all of their records are good at the very least, although obviously their last two are much less revered than this and anthems

Yeah, Anthems was actually my favorite when I was a snobby 16 year old. This however, is the Mecca of their discography. I have clearly matured.

nah Anthems is even an improvement over this, it's musically better. This one is more about the atmosphere, it's more "kvlt", but it's not better. Also more people like the vocals more on this album.

awesome review, kyle. this alum is indeed top notch.

i'm definitely in the minority, though, when i say prometheus is a better album. maybe that's because it was my introduction to emperor, or just find more diversity throughout the tracks, but this is still a masterpiece regardless. inno a satana is one of my favourite songs ever

Love both records but the riffs on this are fantastic. You're right though, this record is all about the atmosphere and it's perfect.

I have to give more of a listen to their newer stuff as I admittedly glossed over them quickly.

I do agree that Anthems is musically superior, however I think atmosphere is more important to Emperor's sound so this wins out. Plus yeah vox here are Ihsahn's best.

My introduction to black metal. Pretty amazing album. I love this one but yeah I like Anthems more because I think it's a bit more memorable.

Dammit Kyle, you beat me to it. Fantastic review, though. A bit on the long side, but it definitely works.
