but we can all agree this is godspeed's worst right
|

no.
I mean it's totally fine that people don't like it I'm sure that there are legitimate reasons even if I haven't seen any articulated yet [not directing this towards you at all daniel because (a) I'm sure ur cool and (b) a 3 ain't bad].
actually it's really hard to say which is godspeed's worst. they're all incredibly close in quality.

I'd put this ahead of Yanqui by only a little and maybe ahead of Allelujah by an even smaller margin, and behind the EP by a really small margin, too. then the other LPs are a little further ahead maybe.

One of the biggest problems I have with this band is how pretentious they are. Usually that isn't an issue for me but they just seem really far up their own arses and it bothers me. Call it a stupid argument but that's how I feel. I like my musicians to be at least a bit down to Earth.
|
| |
I know it might seem that way, but it's less a problem with the band and more indicative of your sensibilities -or lack thereof- towards this type of music. As your taste expands, Godspeed will likely seem much more "down to earth" and you'll no longer misuse words like "pretentious" : )

| |
Possibly, I listen to bands that could be considered pretentious (eg Tool, Swans) but I still enjoy them.
Maybe at some point this band will click with me, because I genuinely do want to enjoy their music.

Don't force it on yourself. Gain an appreciation from other angles (e.g. more accessible post-rock, or some early post-hardcore that incorporates similar songwriting styles, or drone or ambient) and then revisit their records at some other point.
|
| |
I most likely will come to appreciate them at some point, I'll just have to ease myself into drone/post rock first.
It was the case with death metal, at first I couldn't get into it mostly due to the vocals but now it's one of my favourite genres.

Godspeed seem super chill as people and anything but 'pretentious' but I guess it depends on how you see it

first drone track doesn't do it for me but the second is fine. Wish this had more than two "real" tracks on it, but wadda gonna do. The full tracks, I find, are fine, though.
|
| |
it is one full 'real' track split into four, taking out any of the parts that make up its whole would be like taking Flood II out of Boris' Flood album or something
|
| |
'real'

I feel like fans and listeners make the band out to be more pretentious than they actually are. Diehard fans and notsomuchfans often view them as trying to be overly deep or symbolic or something, when the band themselves seem to see their music as just 'tunes'

it's actually more like two normal godspeed tracks--each composed of several internal movements--with two fairly distinct improv-heavy drone sections sandwiched in the middle. So yeah, two "full" tracks with two drone pieces in the middle.
|
| |
fuck outta here, it's one track split into four

I disagree but this is a well written review.
