That avg is absolutely redonkulous

That said, this is close to a 5 for me so I guess I'm fine with it

Goddamn, guess I should listen to this. Never heard this guy before tbh, but I haven't ventured much into hip hop. Started getting into it recently.

Probably one of the most, if not the most overrated rap album to come out recently. I don't understand where the all the acclaim comes from. It's not that revolutionary or exceptional. I understand that I am a bit biased as I just don't like the whole jazz rap thing this album is based on (though I actually somewhat like a few tracks) but even looking at the other aspects of it, it just doesn't add up in my mind. Also, people already claiming it's a classic is absurd. This doesn't hold a candle to GKMC, not even close.

@:AGERMANAVACADO: Can't call it a classic yet, but this is one of the best hip hop albums to come out in a long time. GKMC was a great album, but that wasn't revolutionary either, and the content on GKMC was much less original and tbh it was a really simple story. This was a much better album imo.

In here the concept is more realised and coherent than on gkmc, the production is more unique (not calling it innovative or anything, but it's varied, meticulous, and suits the moods of the songs). The lyrics have a ton of depth to them, and this has a ton of great one-liners too. It's not that weird that the hype-train goes so hard tbh..

I understand why the hype is real, I also understand that this album is not for everyone, plenty of people won't enjoy it. So far its getting really good reviews from the critics, but its such a departure from GKMC that some fans might not enjoy it. And that's fine.

@Ritvik I don't disagree with what you're saying. While GKMC is also by no means a revolutionary album and the lyrical content was rather straightforward, I think it was delivered better than the messages on TPAB are and I just like the production/beats overall more.

@SaneTPB I'm interested in knowing how you feel that the concepts and themes on this album are more realized. I can't really say anything about the instrumentation, it's just a matter of preference and I don't really enjoy them. Now the lyrics having lots of depth or more depth than his previous work? I think that's arguable. I don't think the lyrics on here are anymore "deep" or thoughtful than they are on GKCM. The messages and themes don't seem to be that hard to understand.

I don't know, I just really don't get why everyone thinks this a gift from the gods for rap. Even trying to look at it from an objective perspective, I don't see how this deserves the praise it's getting.

i mean the album is so well done, well produced, great lyrics, great tightly packed concept that if you don't like it it simply comes down to taste and simply don't like how it "sounds", which is perfectly acceptable

@AGERMANAVACADO: "and I just like the production/beats overall more." Its all personal tastes, if you aren't into jazz rap that much, you won't enjoy this much.

@guitarded_chuck: A lot of it for me really does come down to the sound and my personal preferences. That is the main reason I don't like this. I read the post. I don't think the messages or themes or concepts on this are poorly done or whatever, but I don't feel that that makes it deserving of across the board 4.5's and 5's. If it wasn't jazz rap, hell I would probably give a higher score myself lol. But I am refraining until I listen to it some more to decide my final opinion on it. I understand that not every album is enjoyed the first time someone listens to it.

I just feel like this whole album is blown out of proportion. Objectively speaking, he doesn't do anything "bad" on this album but I think a lot of people are just riding on hype and the fact that it's Kendrick. I'm not trying to insinuate that this can be said for yourself, nor for everyone in the camp that enjoys this album, but I think for a fair amount of people it's just that.

and that is totally fine

i don't think one can argue against this being a well-polished and executed album though

i'm not even as into the jazz rap sound as traditional funky west coast sound or modern say cloud rap sound so i get that
