"it's pretty shitty when he hits these high notes"

Uhhhh...I heavily disagree.

I was using the "just music" line to point out the difference between albums that mean something to me and albums that are just pleasant background noise.

And yeah totally agree with Brick, his voice is what separates this from other similar works.

potsy you like Silver Jews, right? what's the song again where he says "all my favorite singers couldn't sing"?

I know his voice can be shrill, but it's those imperfections that make this so great. If his voice was smooth and sweet like honey, I don't think it would feel as human. Which is kind of what I was getting at in the last few lines of this review. I respect what you're saying though Potsy, because that's basically how I felt for the first 1-2 years after hearing this. I just came to appreciate it for its flaws. You know how that goes, I'm sure, with other albums at least.

honestly i wouldn't even call them "imperfections," it's just that he's using his voice and his voice only and not doing anything to change how it sounds at all. every time he strains or gets "shrill" i just get mad chills

This guy's music would be nowhere near as appealing if he had a voice like Jose Gonzalez or someone.

The fragility of it kind of pushes the ideas and themes behind the record and makes it more human. I reckon that's a good thing

It certainly is. The whole thing reminds me of how some people complain about the vocals on Neutral Milk Hotel's Aeroplane, then realize later that it's the main thing holding it all together.

On his new song is voice a lot less frail and a lot softer. I can dig his vocals on this, but it definitely took me some time.
