I get slightly angry when people call SOAD and Deftones nu metal because they're so much more than that

SOAD is straight alt-metal, I hear more Hum and GJ in Deftones than nu metal

Hence my point about the genre lumping everyone in it.

Well, they're not anymore, but they had elements in the beginning.

Elements of a genre and being part of its formation don't have to necessarily box you into that genre though, and half of the songs you mentioned are debatable. The line between alt-metal, industrial rock/metal, rap metal, etc. and nu metal can be blurred as hell, so I see your point there, but that's exactly why there's so much debate surrounding the genre. The quality of the bands isn't the base of my argument though (I don't even like SOAD), it's that Deftones post-Around the Fur have more in common with Siamese Dream-era Smashing Pumpkins and A Perfect Circle than Sevendust or Nothingface or Snot or any of the other slightly more "hipster-approved", consensually nu-metal bands. In SOAD's case, you can just kind of hear the difference, it's a bit harder to explain for me at least.

Plus, besides Headup and Back to School (which was pretty much a glorified bonus track anyway), I'd argue Deftones haven't been nu metal since '95.

Not to mention Deftones were trolling when they made Back to School and went out of their way to sound as NU-Metal as they could.

Ryan Martinie is probably the best metal bassist going... that's right I said it.

Although, he's not really going these days. haha And his technical prowess was taken away with every album that came out from the band. But hey.

Sad that they could've easily gone a more prog/technical direction after this but nooooooo they had to fuck it all up

Na, it's the fact they stick to nothing but pure groove while being slightly technical that makes this special. An album more in that direction wouldn't go as well for me since they'd lose that groove. Despite that however an album full of songs like Prod jesus that would be immense.

I see where you're coming from, but they could've easily upped the complexity while retaining that groove; hell, they groove in odd times pretty often throughout their first two albums. Agreed though, Prod is one of the best on here.

Maybe a more ambitious direction could be closer to what I meant.
