I came upon their music quite late in the game. Early 2013 I'd say

If you want to see these guys in a good state, check out their self titled EP and their Hell and Silence EP. Just fun, simple pop rock.

Yeah I've listened to their EPs. They truly are talented. They seem to have believed their own hype which is a shame.

Band gets too much shit. Not their fault they've been crowned the poster child of rock by the record companies and media.

I dont mind their debut album, granted about 75% of the songs were from their EP's which is why it's tolerable but I think the real problem is that they're trying way too hard to be a big hitting alternative group that mainstream radio fans eat up without trying to be good.

Review's allowed. In that case, I'll go post mine as well, had it ready for Tuesday but seems like it's okay to do so now.

Clearly it's working, if worldwide sales figures of Night Visions and the select few European countries this album has already been released in are any indication.

They make fun music. Is it groundbreaking? Is it fantastic? Is it persuading me to pick up a guitar and
start a band? No. But their music isn't as bad as people paint it to be. Does it suck having to hear
Radioactive a million times on the radio? Yes, but I find a lot of the hate for this band is more on the
repercussions of their mainstream success then objective critiques on their sound.
They're very average and even, at times, good at what they do.

This is a really good review, props. I haven't listened to this yet but I will, considering I enjoyed bits and pieces of their debut. I have very low expectations because even without hearing the album, everything you described in your review seems to be exactly the direction they were headed.

I agree with what JWT, this band is certainly far from being bad even if they don't make anything ground breaking anymore. The amount of hate this band gets on this site is staggering considering they're one of the most inoffensive indie rock groups to break into the mainstream in the past few years.
I honestly do think people base their criticisms on how many times their songs play on the radio instead of their actual sound.

Thanks. I can understand someone thinking this is average, but when it stoops to below 2 and begins being
neighbors with Artists such as Brokencyde and the Jonas Brothers, I just shake my head. Fact is that if this
was just another band that didn't make it big, opinions on their music would be quite different.

"I honestly do think people base their criticisms on

of their actual sound."
To an extent that's it, because repetition can kill
even the best songs, but I think it's more that they
follow basic pop formulas/cliches yet still receive
accolades for being a "new and groundbreaking" indie
artist. Those are just trite and meaningless words
that critics like Rolling Stone attach to anything,
and shouldn't be taken seriously. They're a fun,
catchy "rock" band that dwells in mainstream pop but
hides behind the indie guise because that's what's
trending right now. They're a decent band and are
enjoyable to listen to, but they have the depth of
an Ariana Grande record.

Relative to what tho? Lord knows if we had to base quality of music off of our daily interactions with music, most music I hear on the radio outshines the chick last night karaokeing Katy Perry, or the dude in the subway station who thinks he's going to make it big on The Voice or my little cousin's choir butchering twinkle little star.
Your review even begins with "Like it or not, Imagine Dragons' insistence on shoving themselves down our throats doesn't seem to have any foreseeable end". Do you really think they're the ones force feeding their music? You're naive if you believe that. Through decisions from music executives to radio play they've been unfortunately chosen to be the mainstream rock poster child of this generation and it wasn't on their choosing.
Their music isn't groundbreaking, it's cliche and boring at times, but if we're basing ratings off of quality of music, it's slick, has hooks is well recorded and god damn it it sounds better than the dud on the bus trying to rap along to his walkmen.

Please refer to this part from my review:
" and it's so frustrating to see such a reasonably talented band limp along with the grace of a stray dog with a broken hind leg.
In other words, until Imagine Dragons decides to start taking themselves seriously, we shouldn't either, and until they stop working with producers like Alex da Kid and put their focus to actual musicality and songwriting, we will be forced to endure the same mindless crap again and again."

The beauty about music is that, like other mediums, there's different reasons to express yourself. Not every artist has to have the revelation to be "taken seriously" in order to be relevant.
I love comedies. Step Brothers is hilarious and has some ridiculous humor that gets me every time. Should Will Ferrell's career not be taken seriously until he takes himself "seriously" and starts taking more dramatic roles?
When I was younger I used to think bands who made pop music and top 40 were jokes, not to be taken seriously and pushed aside. The older I get, the more i realized that top 40 and bland pop music has it's place. 50 people at a party probably can;t sing along to Kid A together but belting out Call Me Maybe is a blast when the neighbors are pissed you've been playing music all night.
Just like film, literature and other mediums, music has it's place and it's purposes and I think Imagine Dragons can be taken seriously without the need for them to wake up and decide to pen then next great album of the decade.

Good points sowing, i agree that their music is derivative. I just believe they're a victim of their success and that any band making fun music would be ripped to shreds if their songs we're put on repeat and scrutinized daily.
