Yep they've released some undeniably essential work despite them running out of ideas for their newest one.

Their latest release was subdued and reflective, but I don't think they're out of ideas.

You...you didn't mention Embers :-( seriously the acoustic part of that song is the highlight of the album. Glad to see

The Misshapen Steed get some love though, if you're ever driving alone at night put that song on and the drive becomes

infinitely more atmospheric.

Serpent was good, my favorite parts though weren't even by Agalloch. The Musk Ox interludes were fantastic.

Sorry dude haha didn't want to just throw it in there randomly.

Agreed though the interludes on that one were nice.

I agree that Serpent was good, just below Agalloch's standards, which is still pretty impressive getting a 3.5 from me.

Yep. Nice. The way it makes you stop focusing on whatever you're doing and just stare off and contemplate existence for three minutes. Nice.

Serpent's problem is that it lacks those killer guitar tones Mongi talks about in this review. The solos just fall flat as a result.

Yea the variety in this record isn't how the songs in general play out, but in how the guitar sounds imo. And The Misshapen Steed of course.

Nice review. Certainly one of the best albums for the somber seasons. Would be a 5 for me, but on some tracks the lead guitar is kind of annoying, e.g. on the second song. Sounds like out of tune tbh.

the riff is great, but that solo section from 01:25 - 02:07 is truly..urgh... But yeah, overall it's still a good song somehow.

Great review! This album rules. I only recently noticed how bad the production is but the variation of instruments/guitar tones/etc, as you mentioned, makes it such an engaging listen. 3rd best Agalloch album for sure.

the playing on this in general is very sloppy. this is obviously not a band/style that emphasizes technicality, but its annoying when the guitar playing is off time or, as you said, out of tune. mantle had some of this too (not nearly as much) and everything after has been good. they also seem pretty terrible live

I think I remember some parts on this where I thought the guitar leads seemed off. Not to big an issue though and I didn't notice it on Mantle
