Sanmon Gossip was mostly jazz and showtunes. I wouldn't call it overproduced cuteness. That's been taken by Kyary Pamyu Pamyu.

Ok, I have given this album 2 months or so and my veredict is: Sunnny >> Sanmon Gossip. I loved every song in this album, except NIPPON (a rehash from some already generic songs from Tokyo Jihen). I never get that feeling "this song is so weak and brings nothing to the table" while listen to this (NIPPON aside), instead of Sanmon Gossip's fillers like Futaribocchi Jikan that really get on my nerves. Well done Ringo!

Na Sanmon destroys this.

No way. Sanmon has too much generic jazzy tunes that ruins the album.

Albums with two different sounds. Why compare them at all?

I've still gotta check this out. It's the only Shiina album I haven't heard yet :[

Definately her weakest but still worth checking.

So hyped for the new album. Listening to this again, its much better than I initially gave it credit for. JL005 is spectacular

Need to get round to this, been kinda apprehensive about it since almost but not quite getting into Sanmon

If you dont like Sanmon im not sure how much you will dig this... compared to Sanmon this has a bit more of a 'pop rock' flair, while the aforementioned is more 'big band pop-jazz'. Not to say this album isnt jazz influenced, because it most definitely is.

I dig Sanmon to a certain degree tbh, just thought it was a bit cluttered and wasn't sold on some of the arrangements; will see how this goes

So this is kinda a pleasant surprise so far

Yea, its honestly a really good album, but just pales in comparison to Shiina's other works. A great number of stand out tracks on this one (as i've mentioned above)

Yeah the standouts are great - Arikita na Onna is as catchy as anything she's made

The highs on this are really good but her loud overproduced 'cool' stuff like Shizuka Naru Gyakushu does nothing for me, as I said Gossip did a lot of this album better.

Reminder that the new album is out!
|
| |
it's a bit shit
as usual the arrangements are all epic but the songwriting is utterly forgettable
at least the album might turn some westerners onto Elephant Kashimashi

Biggest issue is that the majority of the tracks have been out for a few years. Some of the new tracks are pretty good, at least on my first few listens. Not sure what to think of the album closer tho...
|
| |
i like that both the opener and closer are a bit different but they're also both underdeveloped. plus the accordion break in the closer fucking ruins the song, not cuz it sounds bad or anything but because it's so incongruous with the parts preceding it that it absolutely kills the momentum that had been built up til that point.

I'll have a listen when my time is freer.
In the meantime, I'll use the attention the new album is getting to say watch her show Dynamite Out already. It's online and it's just as good as Kalk/Strip, top of her game: https://www.bilibili.com/video/av6910972/?spm_id_from=333.788.videocard.0
