this review is well written, covers a popular band, gives a score close to the site average, and is pretty interesting & bold in content. makes sense that it would be received well. my only complaint is how high-brow it is for an album that doesn't need it, and how it could isolate most casual readers, but that's just a personal preference.

But if one is simply to take this as a piece of music without considering its meaning, a significant part of its value is lost

Interesting way to consider music, but to me it's still entertainment at its base form.

In that case, you will never be able to enjoy it truly as a high artform.

"without considering its meaning" - there are plenty of meanings you could attach to this, like any other art form. there is no definite, 100% 'true meaning'. it's whatever you want it to be. It's great that you're applying that level of insight - it shows a deep appreciation - but at the same time, people who read this might find that you're shoehorning some of it. keep in mind who you're writing for. if you're just writing for yourself, then it comes off as self-indulgent. people who are reviewers here might read this and say "wow, great review, pos!" whereas people who surf the site and just want some insight on the album are probably gonna stop reading after the first paragraph.

tl;dr - you could whittle this stuff down, keeping a lot of the insight but still making an entertaining read. just my 2 cents

I gotta agree with Johnny here. Your score doesn't really justify why you had to write 5 fairly lengthy paragraphs for the album. And yeah, I get the whole "music is an art form" argument, but still. It feels like you could definitely cut down a little bit and still get the same point across. Don't get me wrong, the review isn't bad by any means, but I just feel like it could be a lot better if you cut down on some of the filler. You'll get much better at this with time, trust me. My first review was just a sploogefest for Judas Priest's 1990 album Painkiller, so I understand where you're coming from, haha.

In other words: Good first review, but try to be a little more concise in the future.

"Your score doesn't really justify why you had to write 5 fairly lengthy paragraphs for the album"
- ehh... idk if I agree with that necessarily. I was referring more to the content itself than the length. I meant that a lot of your points on surrealism, capitalism, and patriarchalism were a bit too relentless and talked themselves in circles. there's also a few comparison that will obviously get lost on the reader, such as "every now and then something happens to shatter this mundane context like a basket of dodo eggs en route to the Montauk Project" - really? that is the most fitting analogy?

"there are plenty of meanings you could attach to this, like any other art form. there is no definite, 100% 'true meaning'. it's whatever you want it to be."

But is it really whatever you want it to be? I'd say it's whatever you can draw out of the music, which is something else entirely. In any case, I did not mean to objectivise in this review; it is just my interpretation.

"keep in mind who you're writing for."

Ultimately, anyone who wants to read. If the reader dislikes my content, they are very much welcome to consult more straightforward review.

"tl;dr - you could whittle this stuff down, keeping a lot of the insight but still making an entertaining read. just my 2 cents"

I'll bear that in mind, thanks for your advice.

"Ultimately, anyone who wants to read"
fair enough, can't argue with that. I wasn't trying to be scathing, just trying to give the best feedback I could muster.

"it is just my interpretation"
can't argue with that either. all in all, still a very good review

when you said "if one is simply to take this as a piece of music without considering its meaning" it felt like you were making an objective statement, my apologies

Understood and appreciated - I was also trying to avoid seeming confrontational.

Well written review and great for a first but it's a little too "clinical" for my taste.
