Musically or in terms of his band name? I think he wanted to move on from the stuff he associated with JM so that makes sense. Musically, I'd get why he's trying to find a sound that works without being so youthful like Something Corporate and Jack's Mannequin

All I can hear in Canyon Moon's chorus is Larger Than Life by Backstreet Boys. Which is no bad thing, I guess.
