Good review mate - I'm don't agree that Switchfoot bring nothing "new to the table" but you hit the nail on the head with regard to the influence of bands like Goo Goo Dolls. And Twenty-Four is by far my favourite track on the CD - but then I think this is probably one of the best alt albums of the last 5 years.
I think the aspect of Beautiful Letdown that stuck out to me was that the sounds are quite varied - it almost sounds like a band trying to find itself than an established rock act (which I think is evidenced by the more consistent -- and slightly less entertaining -- followup, 'Nothing is Sound'), but it works to the bands advantage. Like, you've got your faster rock ('Meant to Live', 'Ammunition' and 'Adding to the Noise'), electronic elements ('This Is Your Life'), blatant pop-rock ('Gone'), hard rock ballad ('Dare You To Move' and 'The Beautiful Letdown') and more traditional ballad ('Twenty Four'). In comparison, Nothing is Sound is pretty much rock from start to finish, with a little electronic-pop stuff thrown in more as an afterthought.
Anyway, thats the end of my rant - as I say, good review mate - I really enjoyed reading it. Keep up the good work!
