How did they copy PT on damnation? It's just a matter of taste. Damnation is more
atmospheric, bleaker, emotional, and soothing. Heritage is just kinda like this to me. The point is that yea they copied the
more classic bands, but they did it in a derivative way and didn't give an original take on it.

"Damnation is more atmospheric, bleaker, emotional, and soothing."
I think you answered your question, Mongi. Sounds like Porcupine Tree to me.
I had a similar conversation with a dude about TFK and Linkin Park. We immediately said the new TFK was a "Linkin Park rip off" because we could care less about either band's style, but he liked the style and pointed out other bands sound similar but no one says their rip-offs because they like the style to begin with. I agreed with him. I like Marillion, but they do admittedly sound so much like Genesis it's ridiculous. So you're right, Mongi, it's about taste. I think the new albums get too much hate because many don't actually care for old prog bands as much as I do. They just write it off because it's not their style. You like Porcupine Tree a lot, so when you hear something that sounds like it you enjoy it. At the most you would say it's "inspired by PT," like I say this is "inspired by old-school prog."

For the record is really like KC a lot. Red is an impressive album and I have re listen to In The Court cause it's been quite some time. PT is prob my fav band yea and the influence of PT is apparent on Damnation but I wouldn't go as far as to say it copies PT honestly. As for this one, it could really used some more dynamics.

Bleak, emotional and soothing doesn't always equal PT and it might have SW DNA on it but this and Heritage are still very different records to Damnation

I think we can all agree there.

Also, some people are just more fond of a melancholic vibe. That's one of the reasons I don't particularly like River on this because it's a bit too upbeat

Def needs more time to sink in, album hasn't even been officially released yet and the 320 CD rip only leaked today.
Obv don't agree with the rev but it is well written.

The logic behind loving Damnation and hating the last two albums continues to elude me. Copy Porcupine Tree...AWESOME! Copy the real good prog bands that have 10x more variety...SUX!
What gets to me is the fact that Heritage only has precisely 3 moments that could be linked directly to a particular 70's (prog) band and none of those moments are anywhere as derivative as a certain shameless Camel rip off from Still Life which no one seems to have a problem with. Yet people moan about Heritage being derivative when in fact it's one of the less derivative 70's-influenced modern prog albums out there.
