I understand what you're saying, but what you might describe as a perfect blend of two genres is, quite frankly, less perfect than other bands. Green Day is a relatively solid pop/punk band with somewhat thoughtful music, and My Chemical Romance has more of an edge, but I'd say they would appeal to you, too.
You may think that this is what's "good," but if you broadened your horizons, you'd see just how mediocre these guys are.

See, I get what you're saying, I really do. Of course they're no Green Day by a long shot. But nobody's trying to argue that they are. The guys constantly cite the likes of Green Day and Blink-182 as their inspirations, so if they had wanted to sound more like them, I feel like they would've. They made the conscious decision to go pop with a rock/punk edge. I mean, they had a shit ton of guest writers from pop/punk bands on this record, so if they had wanted for it to sound pop/punk, they would have.
It's a bit of an unfair comparison to make, really. Just because Alanis Morisette made better records, does that make Katy Perry or Taylor Swift undeserving of being listened to? Does the mere existence of punk, rock and indie make pop disposable by default?
If Green Day and MCR and ATL were solid blends of pop and punk, they would've made it into the mainstream like these guys have. Obviously 5SOS were smart enough to figure out what the public wanted. They may not be the best pop punk band that ever lived, but I do believe they're going to make the genre more popular to the mass again. People are realising that this could very well be an opportunity for Warped tour bands to have some crossover success. ATL are literally jumping to tour with these guys.
