not always sure about how The Mars Volta are described in reviews and interview and such n' stuffs
like two thirds of their songs are just some simple singer-songwriter progressions stretched out to anywhere between eight and thirty minutes, jammed over and then book-ended by guitar effects but we're meant to think of them this super muso avant-prog-fusion monolith. a lot of their shit sounds like it was done in one take. they're a jam band.
oh well EP is not bad

I think "Cassandra Gemini" is an incredible jam, Cimnele, and I never got the vibe that there were "reused" ideas in it. Sure, Omar liked to add goofy guitar jams everywhere, but that song felt complete. It didn't seem simple; it felt epic and expansive. I'll admit that some songs are excessive, I won't deny that, but between the conceptual nature of their music and the frequent shift in mood throughout their records, I can't call them "simple" at all.
If you dug the Antemasque preview EP, you'd like this a lot. Has a lot of the same styles and moods.

this is on top of my "to listen to" list

Several listens into the album and liking it a whole bunch. The song structures are much simpler and more conventional than Volta, but there's plenty of awesome songwriting and consistently strong vocals. Like others, I'd say 50,000 Kilowatts is perhaps the weak(er) point, if any.
I like the addition of drums to the album version of "Drown All Your Witches". To my ears there's a whole lotta Zep going on there.
Look forward to hearing it all live sometime.

The quality varies from track to track; Providence, Lurch, and Remorse are the standouts for me.
I'm mostly just glad that they're making music together again.

@Taxt
All of those were some of my favorites too. If they kept the original version of "Drown All Your Witches", it'd be there too.

Not a bad album, but it's lacking in something.

Panzer. And cheese. Everything needs more cheese. Some cheddar would be nice although I wouldn't be turned down by Feta, either.

namedropping mars volta in the first sentence
a surefire way to make me hate this instantly

what's so weird about that? considering two of the members in this were the forefront of everything that band did, it'd be silly to not mention it somewhere.

I see what you're saying. Everyone will compare to Volta though, and if not Volta ATDI.

In my defense, that intro paragraph was more as a contextual background one, though I will admit that I did compare Antemasque to Mars Volta in the review body. But like botb said, I don't really see why doing so is an issue.

It's not. I can see why someone would be like that though, because this is completely new, and would be unfair to compare to previous work.
