This is a really great review. Like most, I just can't accept this is a 5, but this does make a compelling argument. Mostly for me this album pales compared to the Alligator-Boxer-High Violet run because it is just a too boring, not as musically cohesive, and Matt hadn't quite found his voice yet. Though "Available" is definitely in their top 10 songs ever.

honestly the first paragraph kinda negates the whole review. if you have to go on like that about the definition of a "classic," you probably shouldn't be calling said album a "classic"

I like the alt country influence in the first two National albums but it was hardly like the world was screaming out for more bands with that sound in 2003 - career genius to jettison it and try for something a bit different on the subsequent albums.

I do sort of agree that there is a difference between a "perfect" album (read a 5/5) and a "classic". Many significant albums are considered classic even if they are not objectively as good as a lot of other albums.
