Nice write-up, Voivod. I haven't listened to any post-1994 Mayhem, but I might give this a shot.

I liked what they did with Grand Declaration... otherwise I'm not really a fan.

Grand Declaration of War is a really great album, and it was a huge surprise.

Maniac was Mayhem's best vocalist by far.

Mayhem played a key role in the development of intelligent black metal in the 00s with their previous three albums.

I'm actually not going to rip into you for calling this "intelligent black metal". I get it; it's technical as it is mysterious and always evolving. Maybe it's your wording that's throws people off but I kind of like it.

Great review buddy, this is starting to grow on me.

I think part of the issue with the wording of that particular phrase is that English isn't his first language so there might be something lost in translation.

Third paragraph: "Attila Czihar" is actually "Attila Csihar" with "s"

Just a small detail I noticed. Otherwise very good review

fixed.

English is not my first language, but that's exactly what I wanted to write in the summary. And Wizard's comment is spot on with regard to what I mean by that "tag". What's not entirely evident in the summary is that Mayhem go through the motions of the intelligent wing of Norwegian black metal (all the review recs come from Norwegian outfits), so I will probably edit it in that light.

Cool review Voivod, can't wait to check this out.

I've never seen the phrase "intelligent black metal" before, I would probably just call it "progressive".

^^^I came across the term 10+ years ago and I tend to agree with it. And yeah, you can call it "progressive" as well.

I guess I have to try to listen to this again, what with the many positive comments and all. :3 Not particularly my style, but we shall see!
