I actually agree with you on most things here. The 4.5 is an old rating, probably more like 3.5 now. This is indeed tepid compared to their other records.

But the songwriting here is among their best.

Very solid review, Baron. Sometimes I too feel like I'm being generous giving this a 3 (and I'm a huge Anberlin fan).

This is one of those albums that is nice most of the time, but every once in a while it just hits you hard.

Can someone explain to me what makes To the Wolves not an obnoxious and immature song? seriously, i reallllly like the rest of this record, but that one song always throws it off for me.

also i love this record but the songwriting here is in no way their best.

yeah but the lyrics sound like they could have been off Blueprints, at least the chorus

I can pick lots of worse lyrics on this album

alright, well i think the bad lyrics are either poorly written (a few on the album) or just unarguably juvenile (to the wolves)

Art of War's lyrics are kinda juvenile

Maybe, but they never bothered me. The vibe of that song is just really captivating, and while the lyrics are obviously the weakest point, I don't think they ever degraded the song for me. It just relies on its strengths more than lyrics. But with To the Wolves, repeating awful lyrics over and over makes the flaws glaring.

Take Me As You Found Me is the worst offender in repeating boring lyrics over and over, these thoughts run through my head

haha i don't mind that one though, I actually really like it. I like the kinda word-play in the second verse.

Whoops, I mixed up the songs - I meant We Owe This to Ourselves has repetitive boring lyrics.

I was a about to burn you Baron for dissing Take Me (As You Found Me) because that song is so fucking beautiful.

Upon relisten, yeah, fallenbird's right. That song is a definite highlight.

And I see what you mean by that, but I liked the simplicity of it. While not being one of the best songs on the album, I think it did really well as an opener and I love that middle, soft part and the return to the chorus is so hype.
