Sweet review, but just wanted to point out that only most *visible* black (and white) artists were
male until Queen Aretha
Big Mama Thornton was around back in 1952, when she put out the original version of Hound
Dog that was quickly covered and brought into the spotlight by Presley.
Not to mention the catalogues of work from Ruth Brown and Etta James.
So yeah, sorry to ramble. Loved the review otherwise though! Will definitely check out the album

yeah absolutely but the ones with the massive cultural impact which had the influence most relevant to here are the ones I mention. good point though, especially 'cause Etta James kicks so much ass
and this is only the length of an average P4K review haha it's only 6 paragraphs. if people actually wanted to randomly read something >2000 words I could probably have written more but this is about as long as I want to make my reviews at this point

Fair enough haha
The line in particular I took issue was "The musicians also struggled with the question of what, exactly, it meant to be a black male in this brave new world (and yes, until Queen Aretha most of the artists were indeed male"
And yes, yes she does

"most traditionally black music over the past fifty years is an attempt at expression of self"
well... you can argue that most music is an attempt at expression of self, good review regardless

the same theory/similar theories argue that the issue with a lot of predominantly white and "bourgeoisie" music was that the circlejerk between artists and critics helped further an idea of music as high art: if it was an expression of self, it was often too highbrow and ostentatious to actually come across as true. the kind of music I talk about here was far more visceral and easily-digested
|
| |
or your music may not be an expression of self if it's commercial garbage that purposefully sounds like band A or B, but yeah... I felt that this statement was a bit too general... works in the context though. I definitely know what you were trying to say.
