Good review. I agree that this is better than their last few albums, however I thought the production left something to be desired. I don't disagree with you about the 'overproduction' quality of the Bob Rock sound, but one thing I've always thought Bob Rock did well was nail the EQ on the instrumentation.
I've found that the songs that make it onto 'Bob Rock records' aren't necessarily the greatest, but he's got a good ear.
There are moments on this album when I've thought the guitar could use a little more mid, the vocals could be mixed a little louder or a hair more even throughout, but the songs are definitely better, overcoming those small notes.

As I commented earlier, the production here allows for some dynamic range which I personally think is important for 311's sound. On a track like Friday afternoon, the crunchy guitar comes in at a noticeably higher volume and makes an impact you can actually feel. That would never happen on a Bob Rock record. Also, there seem to be more abrupt stylistic changes within songs here, and loud/soft dynamic that 311 successfully employed on their earlier releases is allowed to come through clearly. Again, not possible on a Bob Rock record.

And some people think that Martin's prose was at it's most free during A Dance With Dragons, while others think it could have used some more objective editing.
There is no right or wrong, but I can guarantee you that Mahoney's amp settings will be different for the live show than they were on this record.
I also can't imagine that their sound tech for upcoming shows will say "hey guys, we're going to mix everything really well for your other songs, then I'll mess with the mixing so it's uneven for your new songs."
Like I said, I think these songs are better, but sometimes the 'raw' vs. 'poorly mixed' debate gets a little muddled.

The "Tranquility" chorus is High and Dry ;-P

The slower pace of “Revelation of the Year” and “Friday Afternoon” provide the album’s weakest songs
shiit Revelation is def one of my faves. So reminiscent of Transistor, mann

This borrows heavily from s/t, Transistor, and Soundsystem. I approve.

Tranquility is probably the worst song on here followed by The Call. Revelation of the Year and Friday Afternoon are probably towards the top.

This album will make long time fans like myself really happy but I think it is accessible to new listeners including musicphilies who expert a bit more from their music. The album explores some new areas but still keeps their signature style (as the review mentions) which they have shown is still original and relevant.
Its worth a listen even to those who previously were not that into 311
Props 311
boom box boom box boom box owww!
