Being that Opeth is my favorite band, I will say I like the atmosphere they created with this album. It scares you, flat out. Their are parts in songs such as "Ghost of Perdition" that came completely out of nowhere, yet kept the same feeling throughout and again, SCARED me. "Atonement" is one of the worst Opeth songs I've heard. I remember when I bought this on its release date, listened through the songs before it and literally skipped the song. I agree, that I would not hold this over neither "Blackwater Park" nor "Still Life" but it is still a solid release that any Opeth fan would enjoy.
By the way, great review here Confessed. It was very concise and I agreed on about 95% of what was said in it. A five is a TAD high for this album. A 4 or 4.5 would've been more suitable, but it's your review so rate as you see fit.

Thanks MADRIGAL I spent a long time on this review in particular because even though digesting any material by Opeth is nigh on impossible, I wanted to give a slightly different style of review to ShadowsFallen's. I go through phases of thinking the album as a five and others where I feel a four or maybe 4.5 would be more suitable. I'm guessing I went through a five stage when I eventually finished this.

Any news on when the band will be releasing their new album?
I have heard that once they have finished their UK Tour (which I am hoping to go and witness ) they will begin work on a new release.

Already got my ticket for the November tour, I need to get Blackwater Park, but Ill probably get this soon cause its cheaper and easier to find than most Opeth albums. Also, Ghost of Perdition and the Grand Conjuration rule. Ill definitely be looking forward to their new album too.

This album is easily Opeth's worst. I don't know what it is about this album but I just don't click with it =.

I gotta say this is my favorite all round album from Opeth, many may disagree, but i love this album, im a big fan of their newer sounding stuff. DONT get me wrong its just as much as i love their older tunes, but theres just a certain peak in this album that i enjoy. I would have to say alot has to do with the tone of it all, and like always the technically is spectacular. I give this album 5/5. Classic work in my opinion.

This album is NOT a classic by any means.
One of the lesser Opeth albums, albeit one of the better of the bottom half.

And this may put fanboys in an outrage, but Isolation Years is one of their worst songs.
Especially lyrically.
I would say that Ghost Reveries/ Harlequin Forest is one of their most accessible.

Well written review, but this album is poor compared to Morningrise, Still life and BWP.
Orchid is still a class above this.
But good review.
Oh yeah, and why are people talking about Naziism and Judaism?

Ghost of Perdition slays.

Yes, there are quite a few standout tracks on this album though.
It is Opeth, after all.

The Grand Conjuration is ****ing epic. That or Reverie/Harlequin Forest is my favorite here. I rank it up there with Still Life and Damnation... Well, not Damnation, but really close to it.

Ghost Of Perdition, Hours Of Wealth and Harlequin Forest are mine

Atonement is my favourite track.
Not my favourite track from this album.
Not my favourite track from Opeth.
It is my all time favourite song.
I can't see how you could give it a 3/5.
This album is perfect.
5/5

Atonement is highly underrated; while not brilliant as an individual song, it fits into the album perfectly.

It indeed fits the album perfectly
