I hear you, but the vocals have always been like that in Wooden Shjips. As I write in the review, the band is in the '60s/'70s psychedelic drone business, and that includes Ripley's subtle vocals as well.
Edit:
Also, any rating between 3-4 is totally "okay" for this album, but that 1/5 is really far fetched in my book.

1/5 wtf, it's definitely not that... 3 at lowest but I'd hate to give it that because it's a great genre and I probably just don't 'get' it yet

^^^ That's exactly what I do with genres I don't "get", genres such as indie, for example.
Im most cases, I'd rather not rate than give a "low" rating.

these guys really do sit in their comfort sound. still interesting though.

Agreed, but so far, they have tried a slightly different (but different altogether) angle with each album.
It's only a few days since the release of Back To Land and I'm already curious about what direction they will follow on their next album.

Sounds like me with death/black metal except I can't get through an entire album to be able to rate it haha

I was watching the final episode of the first season of The Diplomat, and at some point "These Shadows" kicked in.
Nice to know people appreciate Wooden Shjips, enough to feature their music in their high profile TV show.
