Awesome album. Most of the songs have a good, hard drive and wouldn't be quite as heavy or indeed effective without that solid rhythm section. Admittedly this is the first release I've listened to the band, so I assume the previous two albums are just as good. That said, 'Doen', 'No hope', 'Dawn rising' and '1516' are all absolute belters.

A stoner rock album getting only a 3 from greg? What's happening here?
|
| |
Probably because it's more stoner metal than stoner rock and while you'd think "what's the big difference?", Greg can feel it ain't quite the same.

Ha. I think it has more of a stoner pop vibe actually.

It's also that I generally see Greg handing out more generous ratings. But yes, there is a difference.

Nice review Greg, I haven't giving MTM its due diligence cause it just made me wish I was listening to Mastodon. I may give it another chance after this review before I check this one out.

Fuckin' love this song but it's only as stoner as "you might enjoy listening to it stoned".
Black Sabbath are obviously a massive influence on stoner but I'd say they're more at the hard-rock-
with-stoner-leanings end of the genre... at the other end there's crazy shit like this:

I really like Murder the Mountains, still haven't checked this one out. Yeah, Stoner Rock was a term coined back in the early 90s, and they was a huge underground scene full of a lot of kickass bands, and it's crazy that over the past few years, there has been a resurgence and appreciation of the genre. Some of my favorite albums of Stoner Rock: Orange Goblin - The Big Black, Solace - Further, Truckfighters - Gravity X, Eternal Elysium - Spiritualized D, Halfway to Gone - Halfway to Gone, Unida...just to name a few besides the obvious ones.. Good review, Greg.

Yeah. Definitely... Halfway To Gone are so underappreciated. I love them. I also really dug Murder the Mountains.
