This is disappointing to hear. I very much enjoyed House of Balloons and Echoes of Silence. I'll have to give this a listen.

I think you meant "the latter" in the first sentence of the second paragraph. Interesting review and well-written.

I'm a bit confused, then. So, are you arguing that The Weeknd, despite the mystery, aesthetic coherence, and internal consistency you attribute to the moniker in the second paragraph, it turned out to be simply a pseudonym for Tesfaye? I guess, suggesting that given this album, the whole project was a false promise?

Or, are you arguing that the moniker really was "a more subtle reference to the music itself - a mysterious, disembodied being with no celebrity obtruding its aim," which is the latter of the three choices you established at the conclusion of the first paragraph, and that now the mystery is beginning to slowly evaporate with exposure?

I'm saying that it's probably just meant as a stage name for Tesfaye but that it's not very obvious and it came across as a separate entity to him. But now his true persona is coming through more.

Ah, makes sense. Sorry, I haven't eaten all day and it's been a long one.

Great review. Identify and agree with everything you said here. I left so underwhelmed after listening to this record. It just disappointed me as I loved the three tapes.
It may be a grower, I cling to that optimism, but it seemed long winded and repetitive and a bit too alike a Michael Jackson record at times.

Also, that has to be one of Drake's worst verses to date, I like Drake but it's hard to defend him when he drops shit like that.

this review is great fish. i don't know yet whether i agree with you though. this certainly isn't the special release that the mixtapes were, but i don't see how it could have been. circumstances are different now. i guess that's what you were saying though, idk. he is still a fantastic vocalist and they production is still awesome, but i'll miss the druggy jams too.

The Weeknd is my favourite artist from the last few years, and I wanted to love this album so much, but you absolutely nailed this review. I could never really put it together about this album and what I didn't like, but this is perfect. I wish Abel could see this review and figure it out himself.
