Themata to me is incredibly consistent whereas this has high highs (Simple Boy, Goliath, Deadman and Change) and some pretty boring parts (The Caudal Lure). Themata just had so much groove and feel without getting self-indulgent as this sometimes does.

Themata to me is the embodiment of a raw album by a band dying to get it recorded. Sound Awake is just a more thought out, sophisticated album because it's obvious the band have contemplated how to write it more. Asymmetry is the album made by a band having to confront mountainous expectations, clearly confused and thinking too much of what to put on the disc.
