Great job, Omaha.
Album grew on me pretty quickly, and I love Hopeless Again off this the most, honestly.
Also, where's ma Sawyer avatar? DGD is NOT a replacement, lol.

Interesting that you say it's musically forgettable but still call it great.

I get tired of avatars quickly...
And albums can be both forgettable and great. There are a lot of albums I really enjoy, but they're more passive listens than anything-- because of that, and because they don't achieve as much musically, they don't really stick with me.

| |
Also, I did say this album will be forgettable for those that only care about the music. I'm not really one of those people.

I would think great would stick in your head a little at least. Perhaps maybe not make a lasting impression but that's just how I look at things. I did see you put musically forgettable but forgot to put that in my reply.
My baaaaaad.
Just seems that seeing let's say 80% of the album is music, forgetting that is a pretty big part of the experience. That reads as an average to good for me. Of course I'm not you so you know, whatevs.

I already forgot what this sounds like

just listened to bastards and it's an absolute jam. if the rest of the album holds similar promise, i don't feel i'll be as similarly disappointed as y'all.

Bastards is the only good song

JAV, you bring up a very important point. While 80% of this album is music (I might say less because of the vocal centric mixing job,) I find that the instrumentation is more or less structured to function as a backbone for the vocals. So because of that, I find myself predictably pleased with the storytelling here, but a bit disappointed that the other members of the group seem to be playing it safe. Sure, that's probably what they were going for-- as my review says, Defeater probably wants the record to match Derek's bleak lyrics-- but it isn't a choice I'm pleased with.
But it's still a very solid record, and I'm probably more generous with my rating scores than most. Besides, this review was supposed to be a 3.3-- but I accidentally deleted a negative paragraph, and had to bump the rating a bit. ;]

"just listened to bastards and it's an absolute jam. if the rest of the album holds similar promise, i don't feel i'll be as similarly disappointed as y'all."
There's only a few other songs on here that are at the same pace as Bastards, the rest of the album is pretty slow paced. If you like faster, more traditional hardcore check out their first album Travels.
And after re-listening to Endless Days and Sleepless nights, I prefer Letters Home way more. Their best is still Travels and Lost Ground by far though.
|
| |
i've heard their discography so far: to me, lost ground was their best. travels was a more ambitious
and slightly more underwhelming iteration of lost ground's formula, and endless days was mediocre to
the nth degree.
i wouldn't be surprised if this has continued the downward spiral from endless days, they seemed to
lose a lot of what made them exceptional on that record.
