The scene where a man has boiling water thrown in his face and is then beaten with a frying pan: Not 'brutal'.
The scene where that very same man is vivisected with a sword: Again not brutal.
The scene where a woman has a sword shoved through her neck: Not brutal.
I mean its no I Saw the Devil or Ichi the Killer but it's pretty fucking violent. I think the film goes the way of Inland Empire, Demonlover, and Funny Games where the film receives tepid/poor reviews from critics and in 5 to 10 years is a respected cult film. Although I remember thinking the same thing about The Killer Inside Me and it's been three years since that came out and I don't think anyone even remembers that movie.

Oh and I'm not sure I'd like the music divorced from the film but the sound design and music for the film was brilliant.

I for one liked "Only God Forgives" the sets and lighting were awesome, give it like a year or 2 and people will love the fuck out of it

the movie is pretty to watch and the soundtrack is good.. after that not much more to it but obvious religious undertones.

I liked this film quite a bit, and I thought the score fit the movie really well. I'm not at all surprised that most people hated the movie though.

saw this last night and absolutely loved it
the visuals were spectacular - the atmosphere was a little better than drive's I'd say, even if it had a little less diversity of mood
perfect movie to watch while stoned - was incredibly engrossing
as far as soundtracks though, while cliff's music here was absolutely perfect for the film (really heightened the tension throughout), Ican't imagine listening to it in the same way that I did drive's which was awesome alone from the movie as well

it looks incredible but it's pure style over substance, drive balanced the two well but this is just shallow
|

this is just shallow
I disagree, especially if we're comparing this to drive; I feel like the two are on equal footing in this sense -- but like I said, drive had more dynamic shifts in mood while OGF was much more monotone
given that though I agree that it's definitely "style over substance," (that's probably what viewers should be looking for going into this anyway, isn't it?) but I'm totally cool with that, and it's not like it was completely devoid of substance, and the style is why I was watching anyway
|
| |
in the "style over substance" conversation, did anyone like Spring Breakers more than this?

it's hard to say (I watched them both within the last two weeks) but I really really liked both

This is my movie of the year so far, go watch it with your mum

The cinematography and use of color was like 9/10 worthy. The actual film itself was about a 5/10

Movie was great.
I liked place beyond the pines more though, but this is in my top 3.
The main character (the cop) was the most bad ass mother fucker ive ever seen in a movie. So epic

The score was fantastic (as Cliff Martinez's stuff always is), but I'll be damned if this was not the most disappointing movie I've ever seen. Even my powerful man-crush on Ryan Gosling could not hide the terminal lack of focus this terrible film was plagued with from beginning to end. I honestly believe Rifn made it as part of some elaborate practical joke.
To anyone that has yet to see it: You will be much better off just looking at high resolution still-frames of it than watching the film. The cinematography was sublime, but that can only mean so much when the "narrative" is a giant steaming pile of shit.

So much truth. The movie is literally cinematography porn and nothing else
