"I mean who else can make whole songs of scales and directionless wanking amd gain a following of blind fanatics"
Go check my BTBAM ratings. The Parallax releases are the first two i actually score above 3.0. I know you're generalizing here but well, yep.
@ Mike, having those two albums as 2012 favorites imply that i shortsighted then?

I wouldn't say short-sighted but they kind of hint that you may not have the broadest spectrum of taste. And thanks Chuck I think I might!
I really dislike how many times you say album in that third paragraph...

I get you Mike. You have a point but no matter what i listen to, me liking another album (even from a distant genre, even if over these) doesn't nullify the fact that this is a 4.5 for me, which is saying a lot since i hardly hand out 4s!

"What about Koloss dude?"
Oh yes! It rules as hard, i just wasn't bringing it to discussion. My last year's fav is Parallax II hands down, but there are a few other releases that i rate as high or close to it. PII and Koloss are pretty close up there too!

"I mean who else can make whole songs of scales and directionless wanking amd gain a following of blind fanatics"
By directionless wanking you must be talking about, for example, how the end section of Astral Body gets used again in a middle section of Silent Flight Parliment, with an entirely new melody sung over the top of it. You can also hear snipets of the words from vocal line from Silent Flight pop in and out on the Astral Body part, like it is the prospect character communicating across space or time with himself, and from our perspective across the two songs.
This record is filled to the brim with complex themes, motifs, and lyrical allusions, that to try and reduce it to simple guitar wankery playing nothing but scales only shows how little you know about this band. Plus the complexity of compositional techniques used in their music is so far beyond simple scales, that it shows you probably don't know that much about music theory to begin with either, so probably shouldn't use it as an argument against why you aren't impressed with this band.

This means nothing to me.

This band again...

Oh, please. One doesn't have to ~fully understand music theory~ to be able to criticize a progressive metal album. That is an argument that will always be inadequate, no matter how many times you people like to use it. Sure, there are intricacies of the album that are better understood by music theory, I get that. But from this, you assume this person doesn't know the album? I know this thing pretty fucking well, and I'll tell you that, even though, nope, I'm not a classically trained guitarist, moments like the ending of Bloom are pretty fucking useless. Am I just misreading this album? Or do I simply not care for what the band is going for?

Just because you have adept knowledge in musical theory doesn't make something an objective classic.

Please don't misunderstand. I am simply saying it is sounds dumb when someone tries to criticize a band for playing nothing but scales and guitar wankery, when it is simply not true. If someone wants to use music theory to criticize a band, they should use it properly and know what they are talking about.
