Been listening to the leak since day 1. Have not heard anything better than this in the past 12 month. Guleh/Zombie Queen cannot be touched.

To be fair I had their first release as a 4 at first and it grew on me like a bad fungus. I've been just absolutely drooling waiting for this release, so yeah, first listen 5.

I don't know if it will hold up to the first one in terms of staying power for me, but I've really been enjoying myself with this album.

Funny thing is I'm not a huge BOC/MF 70's kind of guy, I'm usually more old school thrash and death. Something about the combination of 60's pop sensibilities and satan just really works here.

well yes the satan thing with poppy hooks might be a slight gimmick but so what. its not like the early dm and bm bands didnt also use gimmicks to get attention.

I have loved them since I first I heard Ritual on youtube before the album came out. I didn't even know what they looked like, I just dug their harmonies, guitar work, use of the organ, and song craft.

If anything I think this album proved them more worthy of song craft, melodies, and use of their instruments, as well as his voice. The "gimmick" schtick should be dropped, but I know it won't go away.

I think these guys are capable of fantastic music in multiple facets, but people can't get passed the gimmick or rely on the gimmick too much rather than actual music.

I see this record getting better with each listen.

But the gimmick is two-fold. Both the throwback sound AND the satanic imagery are gimmicks. If they drop the satanism they turn into Wolfmother or Heritage-era Opeth completely, and I'm not sure anyone wants that. The only way I see the band evolving while remaining novel is if they start incorporating Satanic AOR or Hair Metal in their next release. THAT I'd certainly listen to.

I think it is important that bands are doing the throw back thing. What do you think Stoner Rock was in the 90s? Stoner Rock was an homage to bands like Sir Lord Baltimore, Pentagram, Blue Cheer, Dust, Leafhound, and such. And you know what that did, it brought awareness that holy shit, there was some killer obscure bands that went unnoticed in the 60s and 70s among the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelins, and such. And with it getting popular, it is just making more awareness that these influences will maybe have listeners going back and listening to old records. Ghost isn't just copying a sound, they have their own sound. However, maybe people will go back and listen to bands like Blue Oyster Cult, Mercyful Fate, Abba, Black Widow, Fleetwood Mac, etc, etc, etc because they have some similar tendencies. it is raising awareness for a new generation, as well as inspiring people.

But the time for this sound has come and gone. The album works as entertainment, and by being anachronistic without being plagiaristic, but not as an artistic statement. That's why it is ultimately disposable.
