This came out when I'd just started high school and I destroyed several cds by non stop listening, then I stopped and I have no idea why.
Fucking Rules.

Gave this a couple listens and it didn't stand out to me at all.

A great debut for the band. What stands out to me is the atmosphere on every track, which is always seemingly brooding and dark (as the genre "DOOM METAL" strongly suggests anyway). The flute work at the beginning of 'Reaching happiness, touching pain' is delightful and Dorrian's vocals fit perfectly. I'm not a fan of 'Ebony tears' or 'Soul sacrifice', but they still manage to keep the general flow of the album going.

I had this first at a 3.5, but after a while I raised my mark to a 4 which seems to be the right rating. But still, it is not enough for me. This album is not like anything I have ever heard. So absorbing and so heavy. If it wasn't for the unacceptable production, the weak drums and the inconsistent songwriting, I would have 5d it. Their next two albums are undoubtedly better written, but at the same time so different.

Total fucking classic. Back in the day I fucking destroyed the vinyl I had of this, for too many spinnings. Cathedral almost did no wrong. R.I.P.
