Okay, you have completely over analyzed this album entirely. There is a reason the production is minimal, and the lyrics simple and straight to the point, it underpins the theme and direction of the album. The album is called 'Hell on Earth' by 'Mobb Deep', what were you expecting, complex musical arrangements and emotional, introspective narratives? You're review makes claims such as, "It makes for a brilliant study in psychology through aesthetics but only a mildly satisfying listening experience, the whole thing a sort of homogenous wash."

-This is a completely hilarious and ridiculous statement. Relax, and listen to the album. It is catchy, it is tough, and it's fun. I remember an extensive amount of lines from havoc and p respectively, and the reason you don't is because you listened to this once and proceeded to write a short, negative, and overly analytical review of a simple gangster rap record.

Haha are you going to do ths for every album I don't give a 4.5 or higher (to make this a less trolly response) I can't contend with you questioning my method or how I receive the album. When you find a problem with my review only to prescribe that I listen to the album the "right" way because it is "catchy and fun," I can't do much about that, man. I'm actually pretty bewildered as to how you can find this album catchy--it seems like the defiant opposite to me--but either way that's not my problem. That's you framing your own thoughts on the album as an apparent flaw in my review.

Also why is everyone under the assumption that I have never heard these albums before like something

I'm definitely going to agree with robertsona that this album really isn't fun and catchy. Straightforward? Yes, but to call this "fun" is really stretching it. I love this album because I grew up with it and I love the general atmosphere/theme here, but it's not getting any points from me for being a "fun" listen.

yeah i mean not all late 80s and early 90s hiphop is excellent guys. this is very solid for sure, but just because it's from a hot time in rap history doesn't mean it automatically demands worship.

it's kind of the vibe i get when i see the same people commenting review to review with all classic ratings regardless. it is what it is though, if you like it you like it.

Yeah, I get it. But the thing is, it seems as though those 80's and 90's hip-hop "gems" are the ONLY hip-hop albums getting reviewed from that period.

"singular vision of minimalist intensity.sonic backdrops often bordering on the ephemeral;
sustaining lyrics as disquietingly focused as Chinese water torture. It makes for a brilliant study
in psychology through aesthetics, a sort of homogenous wash. the typically caliginous “Bloodsport”.
It’s an affectation common to the genre, an instinctual need to rap that has gradually turned
pathogenic, even hateful."

dude, you sound like you are reviewing Beethoven, that kind of vocabulary is completely unneccessary
and is just making this review harder to read/understand what you are talking about...

I kinda agree with InHumanForm, it doesn't sound like you listened to this album enough to review it
and/or never really tried to understand what they are doing with this. Like dude its 90s hip hop,
people get that its gonna be relatively simple musically, most people would not count that as a
flaw, though, and would be focused on the genre's forte: lyrics, which you payed basically no
attention at all.

it becomes catchy with more listens, and you seem unwilling to even do that when the artists clearly
expect their listeners to listen to this enough to have most the lyrics memorized... this isn't hip
pop dawg.

This album is pretty dark and if you don't like the sound you will not get anything out of it. Personally I think it's beautiful music; Prodigy and Havoc have amazing voices and the beats suit them perfectly. All the hip hop fans out there who think this is one of the greatest of all time are in the same boat as me; they love the rapping. In that case you would never complain that you didn't remember enough of the lyrics yet...you would just listen to it another 10 times.

To those who are saying this is middle-of-the-road: PLEASE tell me who did this better then, because it's bound to be my new favorite thing. And don't say Nas.

That said, it's a dense album but I definitely remembered a number of lines relatively quickly.
